To sum up the situation, here is what happens:

- When I set my project language pair as English (United States) > Greek (Greece), the TM works, but the TB (Microsoft Term Collection imported from TBX) does not.
- When I set my project language pair as English (United States) > Greek, the TB works, but the TM does not.
- In both of the above cases, spell checking does not work under Kubuntu. The spell checker language is indicated as "el", not "el-gr", so at least the second case should work. And Kubuntu is not that different from Ubuntu: it is the same thing but with KDE instead of Gnome.

To compile the whole thing, I used the suggested tooling, including Adoptium JDK 21.

When you apply TM, all 100% matches are automatically copied to target. You can avoid that by penalizing matches in the "Apply Translation Memory to All Segments" dialog. A 1% penalty is enough.

Swordfish lets you check tags, see the QA menu. It also lets you fix tags using AI so you don't have problems when exporting translations.

What if I only want to see TM matches on the side while working but not have any of them applied before I start? I just want to open the document the way I received it and work interactively.

Plus, Swordfish seems to do some weird replacements of tags which result in 'fatal' warnings when I try to leave the segment. And it also seems to insert slashes (/) for a reason I can't understand. Perhaps it tries to fix/improve matches, which is where most CAT tools fail, at least when it comes to Greek.

You can select to apply TM and search terms when you create a project.

If you setup the project with the right languages, you don't need to apply TM after creating the project, you can do that when creating the project.

I will try again with some other project. Right now, interop with Trados Studio is a big pain point for me. I receive large documents that have been pre-translated against a TM and MT. Exact matches from the TM are confirmed, MT matches are not. In Swordfish, I can't tell those two types of segments apart. They all look the same: no match percentage, no confirmation status, all appear as "Draft". Plus, all tags, paired or unpaired, look the same, so I can't tell if I have two [br] tags one after the other ([br][br]) or one [br] tag followed by a product name placeholder ([br]{productName}). In Swordfish, both look the same: [1][2].

However, I promise I will try to find how I could make this work.

If you verified that the project, the memory and the glossay all share the same languages, then you should get matches and terms from the memory and the glossary when you request them.

Have you actually clicked the "Apply Translation Memory to All Segments" and the "Get Terms for All Segments" buttons? Those buttons are next to the Memory and Glossary selectors.

In Swordfish, both memories and glossaries are multilingual. You don't need to select a language pair when creating them.

The project can contain languages that differ from those in the SDLXLIFF file and your SDLTM. Furthermore, if the SDLXLIFF file is not translated, it may not have a target language declared.

Export your memory and check which languages were imported; do the same with your glossary. Ensure that your project matches the languages you have.

Trados uses old XLIFF 1.2 and Swordfish uses XLIFF 2.1 by default. There is no correspondence of segment states between those different versions of XLIFF. Swordfish shows all segments with text as "translated" and you have to confirm them to make them "final".

You can use a concordance search to verify the data is there. Use the right language code when searching.

What you describe is a mismatch between the language code you selected when creating the project in Swordfish and the language codes the SDLTM contains.

Do a term search, using the appropriate language codes. You probably have the same issue with language missmatches.

I use Swordfish 5.20.2. Here follow a few issues:

1. When I import an SDLXLIFF document, all segments appear in the Draft state, although many of them appear as Translated in Trados Studio. Also, segments that show up with the "AT" badge in Studio (machine-translated segments) appear no different than the rest in Swordfish.

2. When I import an SDLTM memory into a Swordfish TM, I get a confirmation that all segments have been imported. But then this TM appears empty, as it gives no matches and no concordance results. Since Swordfish does not have a TM editor component, there is no way for me to see if the TM is actually empty.

3. When I import a well-known TBX term base (Microsoft Term Collection) which imports fine in all other CAT tools I have tried (including OmegaT, which is also the only one that also displays term definitions), I get a confirmation that the terms have been imported, but then no matches occur.

Conversely, Swordfish is the only tool that displays context notes from SDLXLIFF documents that appear as Document Structure Information (DSI) elements in Trados Studio.

Are there any Swordfish users here who can share experiences or tips regarding interoperability/interchange of files with Swordfish?

Yes, you should definitely look for another tool. I felt ripped off at the time I realized Rodolfo would not move a finger to allow me to install TMXEditor on my new iMac. He says it's all on Git Hub, sorry, but I don't know the first thing about GitHub and I did not pay 100 € to be instructed for DIY-application knitting. So exit everything Maxprogram.

I had the same problem with Swordfish and Stingray, got them both, bought the licenses and now only new MacBook I can't use it, I remember when I just bought it years ago it was possible to disable the license on your old device and then register it on the new one, but that option seems gone.

I was going to buy more products from them to support my workflow, but that is not going to happen anymore, also their website has been changed and there is no option anymore to login to your account as Ii used to do to check my licenses etc. Now I really only on the emails that I got and the installed version on my old MacBook, which is not working very well. Hello,

I have a segment which I wish to split in two: I changed a comma to a period so that there's two sentences within the segment. Then, I go to Edit and select Split Segment. The segment in question lights up blue, and i put the cursor after the aforementioned period. I hit return as instructed, but all that happens is the segment returns to the normal color and my cursor shifts over to the corresponding target text window. No new segment has been created. Any ideas as to why this might be happening? Much obliged in advance.

Came to Proz to check exactly what the OP is asking about: info on user experience with Swordfish.

I'm a long-term memoQ and Trados user with (limited) OmegaT experience (but usually recommending it as a go-to free option). Never had the time/need to try Swordfish (also I've been somewhat discouraged by the low number of stars on github - 33 with mine from today, and Mr. Raya being a single author/contributor as far as I can tell).

That said the building process on Windows was a breeze and in the next couple of days I'm hoping to test it and come back here to share my impressions. Meanwhile, anything I should look out for - quirks I should be aware of? (I'm mostly going to deal with markdown, js, yaml, and html - sometimes actual code may contain comments/ strings that need to be translated and on the other hand sometimes I'll have code samples embedded in plain text... (memoQ's default HTML filter failed me here).

Source (and target) will (ideally) be the files in git repositories (so I'd need to overwrite them - or maybe have a source and target branches? Does Swordfish support some kind of git integration?)

My source language is Polish and target is EN but somewhere down the line there may be German and couple other EU languages - all the files should be UTF-8 but may come from Windows, Mac or Linux users - should I be aware of any possible issues with encoding of language-specific characters?

I'd appreciate any info from existing Swordfish users (also I've just signed up for the groups.io community so I'll probably ask something similar there as well ;)

Swordfish GitHub page ( [url removed] ) has instructions how to build the program from git, you just need to scroll the page down. The only bit missing from there is the fact that you need to install git itself.

The process is as follows (see software versions on the above Swordfish page):

1) Install git for your OS from here: [url removed]
You may need to answer several questions on how exactly you would like to set up git. I believe you can just accept the defaults everywhere, but I chose an alternative terminal program in the Windows installer.
2) Install JDK from here: [url removed]
You need to set the JAVA_HOME environment variable. Don't know about other OSs, but the installer GUI for Windows has an option to do that. I believe you always need to reboot for newly set system-wide environment variables to take effect, so that is assumed everywhere environment variable are mentioned below.
3) Download Ant from here: [url removed]
Unpack it somewhere and set the ANT_HOME environment variable to the full path to the directory that is inside the distribution archive. In my case, the directory name was "apache-ant-1.10.12".
Add the full path to the "bin" subdirectory inside that directory to your PATH environment variable.
I also ran
ant -f fetch.xml -Ddest=system
from command line as suggested in Ant install guide but am not sure if that was really necessary. It took a while.
4) Install NodeJS from here: [url removed]
For Windows, that's just a simple installer executable.
5) Go to the directory where you want to store Swordfish files and run the following in the command line:

git clone [url removed]
cd Swordfish
ant
npm install

If it reports success, the program is installed.

6) To launch the program, run this in the command line:

npm start

You can make a macro that checks if text is present and that is fired automatically.

And since you have the source code, you can add your own features. Or pay someone to do this for you.

The fact that the source code is open, is fantastic. It’s just that I would have to learn to write Java and JavaScript. And then it would take me years to get the tool to the level of refinement of my current tool. 🤣

Thank you Stepan for the support email address. Ctrl+(Shift)+P is not quite what I want. With Ctrl+P, I need to press that shortcut each time, while Ctrl+Shift+P copies the source unconditionally to all empty targets, some of which may get a match later.

Is it possible to configure Swordfish IV to automatically copy the source to target for the current segment if no match is found? I don't mean a bulk action but something that happens each time when I visit a segment that has no TM match. I could not find anything to that effect in Settings > Preferences.
(Edit: I built the program from source, if that's important. The OS is Windows 8.1.)
