Well above average Jan 14, 2018

My income consists of a comfortable retirement pension from having worked as an in-house translator and of my freelancing.

Averages Jan 14, 2018

In America, different states (50) have their own average incomes, then there's the federal average. According to the Pew Research's calculator (found here: http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2016/05/11/are-you-in-the-american-middle-class/), I sit in the middle for the Cleveland-Elyria region in the state of Ohio. Countrywide, I belong to the 47% middle income tier.

In my opinion, what makes American people the poorer are two kinds of expenses: medical costs and educational expenses ($1.3 trillion dollars owed by American students of all ages).

Average vs. median Jan 15, 2018

My income from freelancing and retirement from my full-time translation job matches the average income in the US (according to what I just looked up), but it is considerably higher than the median income.

In a country with a lot of billionaires, average income is not very meaningful, IMO.

If the question referred to average *translation* income, I suspect it's a lot higher than average or median.

Well above the average, but still not good Jan 16, 2018

In my country (Brazil), my income is well above the average. But if I lived in Europe or in North-America, it would be an average medium-class income or a little above it. I'm far from being rich either in Brazil or anywhere else, though, because I don't have valuable assets. After a divorce that washed it all away and more than 20 years of child support for three kids, two of them are in college and the third one is going to college this year.
