Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down Well, I woke up Sunday morning With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt. And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad, So I had one more for dessert. Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes And found my cleanest dirty shirt. Then I washed my face and combed my hair And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day. I'd smoked my mind the night before With cigarettes and songs I'd been picking. But I lit my first and watched a small kid Playing with a can that he was kicking. Then I walked across the street And caught the Sunday smell of someone's frying chicken. And Lord, it took me back to something that I'd lost Somewhere, somehow along the way. En het biertje als ontbijt smaakte best en op één been kun je niet staan. Daarna keek ik in de wasmand en ik deed mijn schoonste vuile hemd maar aan. Mijn kop onder de kraan, kam door mijn haar en met frisse tegenzin de nieuwe dag. De nacht daarvoor had ik mijn brein doorrookt, een asbak vol gitaar en vol met peuken. Ik stak mijn eerste op en zag een jochie dat verveeld tegen een blikje liep te beuken. Ik stak over en rook ineens de zondagsgeur van kip aan ’t spit uit iemands keuken. Mijn God, ik was weer terug bij iets wat ik ooit kende en wat al jaren achter me lag. Op de stoep op zondagmorgen, God, was ik maar veel verder heen. Want een mens voelt zich op zondag werkelijk moederziel alleen. Alleen je allerlaatste uurtje wordt door minder eenzaamheid verstomd dan een doodse stoep op zondag, als je weer op aarde komt. Een meisje op een schommel lachte naar haar vader om vaart te minderen. Ik stopte bij een zondagschool om te luisteren naar de liedjes van de kinderen. En ik hoorde toen ik doorliep in de verte eenzaam klokgelui nazinderen. En het weerklonk tussen de gevels als de verloren dromen van de vorige dag. |
