Introduction
Researches on science education point that to educate scientifically literate students, science teaching should provide the domain of argumentative language and of literary inscriptions, the fundamental cultural tools of science.
The argumentative language is understood as the capacity to relate date and claims, evaluating theoretical statements, forecasting, explanatory models or personal claims using evidence (Jiménez-Aleixandre & Bustamante, 2003). The term literary inscription designates traces, data tables, graphs, maps, spectrums, histograms, pictures or numbers that materialize the study objects of science (Latour & Woolgar, 1997). The inscriptions are fundamental to construct the argumentative language because they formalize the phenomena and are used as evidence into research articles (Bowen & Roth, 2002).
Researches on the use of literary inscriptions indicate the necessity to create a learning environment in which the phenomena materialization may be understood as a social practice, and indicate inquiry-based learning as the best way to develop abilities related to this process (Lunsford et al., 2007). In the same way, arguments must be initiated through inquiry in problem solving, helping students to construct explanations that show the relation among hypotheses, tests, results and conclusion (Cavagnetto, 2010).
Objetivo
Investigamos como os alunos utilizam as inscrições literárias produzidas por eles nas aulas de biologia como evidência em seus argumentos escritos e procuramos entender como a incriptional practices pode favorecer a produção de argumentos.
Metodologia
Aplicamos a inquiry based didatic sequence sobre crescimento populacional de Lemnas sp. em duas classes com 30 alunos entre 14 e 15 anos. Em grupos, os alunos tiveram que investigar como uma população biológica se comporta após colonização de um novo ambiente e comunicar suas conclusões em um relatório científico escolar. A análise dos relatórios se restringiu ao item “interpretação”, no qual o aluno deve apoiar suas conclusões em dados e justifica-las com o conhecimento teórico já produzido.
A análise qualitativa dos argumentos foi adaptada de Sandoval (2001) e realizada em duas etapas:

Quantificamos as relações estabelecidas entre os dados registrados na forma de inscrição literária e elementos relacionados ao conceito de crescimento populacional (potencial de reprodução da espécie; disponibilidade de recursos ambientais; competição intraespecífica; metodologia de contagem do tamanho da população).
Rhetorical use
Avaliamos como os alunos articulavam os dados das inscrições literárias com as relações causais estabelecidas por eles. Identificamos três categorias de uso retórico das inscrições: citação, descrição e interpretação. Na primeira categoria, citação simples, os alunos incluíam os dados ou faziam citação sem propósito claro, sem articular as informações com os elementos conceituais. Na segunda categoria, denominada descrição, os alunos descreviam os dados presentes nas inscrições, mas sem explicitar como eles apoiavam suas conclusões. Por fim, na terceira categoria de uso das inscrições literárias, interpretação, os alunos interpretavam os dados embasando suas conclusões. Quando os alunos descreviam os dados e depois faziam a interpretação do fenômeno descrito, consideramos apenas o terceiro nível de uso retórico.
Resultados
Analisamos 11 relatórios, nos quais encontramos tabelas, gráficos, cálculos da porcentagem de crescimento populacional e fotos como inscrições literárias.
Articulation score
Todos os relatórios articulavam as informações das inscrições com algum dos elementos teórico/metodológicos, porém quatro apresentavam articulação com apenas um elemento. A baixa frequência de articulação da base conceitual ou metodológica com os dados produzidos, num contexto científico, resulta em explicações ou argumentos com pouco poder de persuasão e poderia indicar, no contexto escolar, que os alunos ainda não compreenderam suficientemente a finalidade dos argumentos científicos e os critérios pelos quais serão julgados pela comunidade científica (Sandoval, 2001). Por outro lado, mesmo que tenham se engajado numa prática investigativa autêntica, os alunos não conheciam, previamente, a rubrica com a qual os relatórios seriam analisados. Podemos considerar que no contexto situacional de produção dos textos, para os alunos, ao estabelecer uma única relação entre os dados das inscrições literárias e um conceito teórico ou metodológico, já teriam cumprido a tarefa exigida pela professora.

Quando houve apenas citação, esta se referia à curva modelo de crescimento populacional, não reproduzida pelos alunos nos relatórios. Os alunos se remeteram à curva modelo de crescimento populacional para compará-lo ao observado na investigação, mas não explicitaram o que esta curva representa ou descreve, por exemplo: “O crescimento da população foi igual ao esperado ou teórico.” ou ainda “(...) se formos avaliar os padrões está tudo dentro do esperado.”.
Considerando o contexto situacional de produção deste texto, este tipo de citação pode demonstrar que os alunos acreditam que o dado “fala por si” e que a inscrição literária citada possui as características do fenômeno observado naquele contexto, podendo dar indícios da emergência de uma importante propriedade da inscrição literária no campo científico: substituir o fenômeno (Latour e Woolgar, 1997). Por outro lado, considerando o contexto de produção do texto o campo social escolar, podemos também supor que a simples citação da curva modelo reflete uma concepção de que o fenômeno por ela representado é conhecido e compartilhado por todos, alunos e professores. Os alunos podem supor que a professora já conhece aquela inscrição e, portanto, não é necessário descrevê-la ou interpretá-la (Sandoval, 2001).
As referências descritivas ou interpretativas referiam-se às inscrições literárias construídas pelos alunos.
A citação é basicamente um relato textual daquilo que já havia sido descrito pela inscrição literária (tabela, gráfico ou cálculos), mas em algumas situações os alunos fazem este uso retórico para trazer o contexto de produção das inscrições para o leitor, como por exemplo: “(...) não tivemos uma contagem nos dias 24 e 25. Nos dias 23 a 26 podemos dizer que cresceu 129 Lemnas por dia, mas não temos como comprovar o crescimento delas em cada dia, isso é uma média (...)” ou ainda “Sabemos que no primeiro dia a população estimada foi de 648 indivíduos e no terceiro dia foi de 505 indivíduos, mas comparando as fotos podemos perceber que houve um aumento aparente, mas as Lemnas se localizaram mais nas bordas do recipiente, o que interferiu na contagem.”.
Os alunos relacionam as informações das inscrições com procedimentos da coleta de dados que, no caso, não são compartilhados com o professor, pois cada grupo trabalhou com uma população de Lemnas e optou por maneiras diversas de coleta e registro dos dados. Na ciência, o processo de materialização de dados pode ser considerado uma descontextualização e, desta forma, somente aqueles que conhecem o contexto no qual os dados foram produzidos conseguem acessar o fenômeno representado pelas inscrições literárias (Roth, 2013). A proposta de ensino baseada em investigação parecer ser, então, uma forma adequada para desenvolver as habilidades relacionadas à descontextualização (produção da inscrição) e à recontextualização (descrição do fenômeno) (Wu e Krajcik, 2006; Lunsford, 2007; Roth, 2013).
Na interpretação os alunos articulam o conhecimento teórico com os dados disponíveis. As referências interpretativas produzidas ampliam a descrição localizada do fenômeno, atribuindo um poder persuasivo às inscrições (Sandoval, 2001).
Todas as referências interpretativas foram precedidas por uma referência descritiva.

“Do dia 23 para 26 houve um crescimento de 12%, ou seja, cresceu 12% em 3 dias, por isso podemos dizer que houve um crescimento de 4% por dia.”
Referência interpretativa:
“Podemos ver que diminuiu muito a taxa de crescimento e a nossa hipótese para explicar essa diminuição é que o nível de mortalidade neste período aumentou, e isso pode ter acontecido pois não havia mais espaço.”
A variação das taxas de crescimento ao longo do tempo é um dado que só pôde ser produzido a partir de uma inscrição literária. Ao comunicar os resultados de sua investigação, o grupo de alunos optou por demonstrar todos os cálculos que realizaram para conhecerem o fenômeno e, ao relatar as conclusões para a professora na forma de texto escrito, descreveram exatamente o que já estava nas inscrições. Assim, podemos supor que os alunos não creditaram nas inscrições todo o valor de descrição do fenômeno que elas possuem, ou seja, a propriedade da inscrição literária substituir o fenômeno no campo científico (Latour e Woolgar, 1997) não foi considerada relevante pelos alunos.
Nos relatórios nos quais os alunos fizeram referências interpretativas, o fenômeno observado por eles foi diferente da curva modelo de crescimento populacional utilizada nas aulas. Assim, podemos considerar que quando a inscrição literária produzida pelos correspondia àquela compartilhada pela professora, a interpretação da mesma pode ser dispensada. Já quando não havia correspondência entre a inscrição produzida e a inscrição compartilhada, os alunos tinham que buscar explicações para justificar a discrepância, favorecendo a produção de referências interpretativas.
Conclusão
Este estudo também nos forneceu evidências da importância de se criar um ambiente de aprendizagem no qual a materialização dos fenômenos seja uma prática social, assim como no campo científico. Muitos alunos utilizaram elementos do contexto de produção dos dados para explicar o fenômeno representado pelas inscrições científicas, indicando que essa participação aumenta o repertório interpretativo dos alunos.

Objective
We have investigated how students use the literary inscriptions they have produced during biology classes as evidence in written arguments, and we attempted to understand how inscriptional practices could benefit the development of arguments.
Methodology
An inquiry-based didactic sequence was applied on population growth of Lemnas sp. in two classes with 30 students each, age ranging from 14 to 15 years old. Gathered in groups, the students had to investigate how a biological population behaves after colonizing a new environment and present their findings in a scientific report. The analysis of reports was restricted to the topic “interpretation”, in which students had to support their conclusions based on data and explain those using previous theoretical knowledge. The quantitative analysis of arguments was adapted from Sandoval (2001), and performed in two steps:
Articulation score
The relations between data recorded as literary inscription and elements related to the concept of population growth (reproductive potential of a species, availability of natural resources, intraspecific competition, and method for estimating population size) were quantified.
Rhetorical use
We have evaluated how students connected the data of literary inscriptions with the causal relationships they had proposed. Three categories of rhetoric practice were identified: citation, description and interpretation. In the first category- simple citation- students included the data or citations with no apparent goal, without connecting the information with conceptual elements. In the second category- the description- , students described the data found in the inscriptions, however, without clarifying how these data supported the conclusions. Finally, in the third category of adhibition of literary inscriptions- the interpretation- students interpreted the data corroborating their conclusions. When students described the data and then interpreted the described phenomenon, we considered only the third level of rhetoric use.
Results
We analyzed eleven reports containing tables, figures, calculations of population growth percentage and pictures as literary inscriptions.
Articulation score
. All reports connected information on inscriptions with some of the theoretical/methodological elements; however, in four of them the articulation was with a single element. The low frequency of articulation of the conceptual or methodological basis with the data produced, in a scientific context, results in explanations and arguments with little power of persuasion and could suggest, in the school context, that students still have not fully understood the purpose of scientific arguments or the criteria through which they will be judged by the scientific community (Sandoval, 2001). On the other hand, even if engaged in an authentic investigative practice, students were not previously aware of the criteria by which the reports would be examined. We can consider that, in the situational context of production of reports, the students believed that by establishing a single relationship between data from the literary inscriptions and a theoretical or methodological concept, they had fulfilled the task demanded by the teacher.

When just citation was applied, it referred to the population growth model and it was not explained by the students in the reports. They referred to the curve to compare it to what was observed during investigation, but did not make it explicit what the curve represented or described; e.g. “ the population growth was similar to the expected or the theoretical, or “(...)Analyzing standards, everything is as expected”. Considering the situational context of the elaboration of reports, this kind of citation could demonstrate that students believe the datum “speaks for itself “and that the mentioned literary inscription presents the features of the phenomena observed in that context, which might indicate the emergence of an important characteristic of literary inscription: replacing the phenomenon(Latour and Woolgar, 1997). Still, considering the school social environment as the context behind the preparation of this document, one could also assume that the mere citation of the model reflects a perception that what it represents is known and shared by everyone, including students and teachers. The former could assume that the latter already knew the inscription and, thus, found no necessity to describe or interpret it (Sandoval, 2001).

Citation is basically a textual account of what had already been described by the literary inscription (table, graphs or calculations); however, in some situations students employ this rhetoric use to expose to the reader the context of production of the inscriptions, such as; “(...) we did not have a count on November 24th and 25th. On the 23rd and 26th we could say that 129 Lemnas grew per day, but we cannot prove the growth on each day, it is an average (...)”. Or “we know that on the on the first day the estimate population was 648 individuals, and on the third day it was 505 individuals, but comparing the pictures we could notice that there has been an evident increase, however the individuals were located on the edge of the recipient, what interfered with the counting.”
Students correlated the inscription information with data collection procedures, which, in this case, were not shared with the teacher because each group of students had worked with a different population of Lemnas, and chose different forms of collection and recording of data. In science, the process of data materialization could be regarded as descontextualization and, thus, only who is aware of the context in which data were produced can access the phenomenon represented by the literary inscriptions (Roth, 2013). Evidence-based teaching proposal seems to be a suitable approach to develop skills related to the decontextualization (production of inscription) and recontextualization (description of the event) (Wu and Krajcik, 2006; Lunsford, 2007; Roth, 2013).
When interpreting, students articulated the theory with the available data. The interpretative references created expanded the limited description of the phenomenon, assigning persuasion power to the inscriptions.
All interpretative references were preceded by a descriptive reference.

From the 23rd to the 26th there was a 12% growth, that is, 12% in three days, so we could say there was a 4% growth per day.”
Interpretative reference:
“We found that the growth rate decreased considerably, and our hypothesis to explain the reduction is an increase in the mortality rate in this period, and that could have happened because there was no space left.”
Variation on growth rates over time is a data that could only have been produced from a literary inscription. When reporting the results of the investigation, the group decided to demonstrate every calculation performed to understand the phenomenon and, when exposing their conclusions to the teacher in a report, they described exactly what was already on the inscriptions. Therefore, we could assume that students did not include in the inscriptions all the potential of describing the phenomenon; in other words, students did not consider relevant the literary inscription’s characteristic of replacing the phenomenon in the scientific field (Latour and Woolgar, 1997). On the reports where there were interpretative references, they observed an event different than the population growth model shared by the teacher in the classroom. Thus, we can consider that when the literary inscription the students created matched the teacher’s, its interpretation could be waived. On the other hand, when there was no match between the produced and the shared inscription, students had to look for explanations to justify the disparity, benefiting the production of interpretative references.
CONCLUSIONS
The present study has also provided evidence on the relevance of creating a learning environment in which materialization of phenomena is a social practice, as it is observed in the scientific context. Many students have applied elements of the context of data production to explain the phenomenon represented by scientific inscriptions, indicating that participating in the materialization increases students’ argumentative repertoire.

Source text - English Adriaan Machete's tattoos and artwork are a mixture of different things. They're beauty. They're pain. They're contrasting forces between the macabre and the delicate. Machete is originally from Mexico, but now tattoos in Belgium in his own studio, Machete Ink Gallery. This guy works extremely hard and loves what he does, and it shows. This month, we were graced with a wonderful interview with the man himself.
Hey Adriaan, thanks for speaking with us. How did you first get into tattooing? Did you do an apprenticeship of any kind?
Hi! I got into tattooing by accident. I was a rebellious punk rock kid who was thrown out of school and didn’t know what to do with my life, so after some years of having shitty jobs and studying some years university, I had no expectations in Mexico City. So, I bought a plane ticket to Berlin to visit some friends- I had a Mexican friend called Iban, who was working at "Für Immer". It’s an amazing tattoo shop in Berlin. He started teaching me everything about tattooing. We were both punk rockers living in the same squat, so I started tattooing all my punk friends at the time. After some time I realized that it required more artistic skills, so I got deeply into it, studying the great German tattooers and learning from different artists.
Your style of tattoos is one of those confusing styles, where it is beautiful, yet macabre at the same time. How did this style of work come about?
I’ve always been obsessed about the both sides of humans: macabre and dark imagery but also celebrating life. I mean, I was always the guy who liked the dark side: satanic and pagan stuff; death; Goth; and black metal music. But, at the same time, I was a punk rocker in love with the happy Mexican "day of the dead": a day where people in Mexico remember their dead family members, going to cemeteries and having a funny party, full of colorful flowers, nice music and funny death images... So I’ve been a misfit positive guy. I’m trying to incorporate the both sides of it in my tattoos! Having fun of the dark elements of life...
Are you lucky enough to be able to tattoo exclusively in your style, or do you still have to adapt to what most customers are looking for?
I started tattooing all kind of boring tattoos. I mean tribals, stars and scorpions, like every other tattooer: everything from catalogs and nothing custom. But, after some time, I realized that people liked my own drawings. They liked my mix of old school and dark symbolisms- so I decided that if I make my own designs people where more satisfied with the results! I’m just tattooing only my custom drawings. All of my customers are totally happy about it. They give me total freedom of sketching and I develop some kind of relation with them, when we meet the first time for speaking. I try to find out what feelings they have and what kind of things they like so the tattoos fit them the most... and it works! Many of my costumers, after being tattooed, develop some kind of friendship with me! I’m really thankful to them.
In your work we see a lot of women and neo-traditional themes, what is it about drawing and tattooing these subjects and styles that you like?
I’ve loved old school since the very first sight: bold outlines, strong colors and contrasts. But I didn’t want to define me in one style, so I started playing with other elements: different color degradations, experimenting with some realism, incorporating different pictures and references and the results were what I was looking for. When I draw women it just flows. I’m fascinated about the beauty and the macabre elements, so in every woman face I tattoo I try to experiment with different face emotions.
Did it take you a while to develop your own way of drawing things, or did it come naturally?
Yeah, it was a really hard process. It took me many years of learning. I feel its been inside of me all the time, but I didn’t know how to develop it. I never had been to art school, so I had to study many great artists by myself. For example, I was submerged in the old renaissance and barrock painters like Caravaggio, Michelangelo, and Leonardo… and other times I was studying many old school and new school tattoo artists. I personally believe that any image references can be adapted to new school tattooing, so very often I’m getting new books and getting inspiration from illustrators and painters.
A lot of your drawings seem to take on the shape of backpieces, are they something you'd like to be doing more of?
I always loved backpieces, but was hard to imagine them with new school pieces. The first time I did one I was really scared, but as a cool tattoo artist friend of mine said, "just make everything huge". He was right! (laughs) It takes a lot of planning and positioning, but the results are amazing. I’m totally into it and I have some backpieces in progress for this year, but I also love full sleeves and chest pieces...and hands for sure are on my favorite list.
What mediums do you like to use for your artwork at the minute?
I’m usually painting with a mix of watercolors and acrylic inks. Oil painting is something I want to learn soon, and I personally think that in a painting it is possible to mix all kind of techniques. The result is more about the passion and feelings... but yeah, it takes also a lot of learning process.
Unfortunately, I don’t have much time for painting, because I’m usually sketching for tattoos.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
Usually from books. I’m often in book shops and comic book shops, searching for new ideas and references. Also, I become inspired by other tattoo artists, and sometimes from photography and films. I also found out that when I have bad times or really good times the drawings come out with more expression: it is like passion plays an important role in the creativity for me.
We know you're originally from Mexico, but you tattoo on Berlin now- do you see any major differences in how you work now you're in Berlin?
Yes, a lot of differences. Since living in Berlin, I’ve been continuously developing, drawing all of the time and trying to improve myself everyday. Berlin is full of amazing artists, and I feel I have so much to learn and that makes me try harder. Every time I see new tattoos from the tattooers I like, it makes me feel I have to run home and lock myself to my drawing desk (laughs). Also, the difference is that in Mexico, the tattoo scene is still way behind Europe, and especially in Berlin. Most of the people in Berlin have tattoos, and really big ones! I mean full sleeves, neck, hands and backpieces! Wow...
You're also keen to travel to many other countries- do you feel that you keep learning as you travel, or do you visit conventions to have fun rather than take care of business?
Its a mix. I like seeing all my favorite tattooers at work, and meeting people. When people come to me, and after looking at my pictures they want to get a tattoo, makes me feel really happy. I enjoy very much after a working day to just relax and drink some beers with new friends- sometimes its hard to tattoo the next day after a good party (laughs)!
What is your favourite thing about travelling around the world?
I love seeing new places and new cultures, trying to learn from different people. I feel like a child when I’m in a new city: different smells, tastes, feelings, tasting new food… usually I like cities by the sea or with water around. Thailand, Vietnam and Moscow were kind of my favorites, they were so different than the rest of the world. Its like an adventure. For example, the subway in Moscow, how can you know where to go if everything is in Russian words? (laughs)
Is there anything you'd love to tattoo in the future?
Yes… hard question! (Laughs) For some time I’ve been trying to make more realistic portraits, so I would love to make more of them in the future. I find them hard but so fun to make.
On the other side of that, is there anything you'd never tattoo?
Anything from a catalog, or from a tattoo magazine.
There is a lot of talk over here in the UK at the minute about what makes a good tattoo, and that many people in the general public don't really understand what a good tattoo is, would you agree?
Yes. When I was not a tattooer, was hard for me to see the differences that makes a good tattoo as well, but I would recommend people to always look for custom work and for the tattoo artist that fits them the most. It will always feel good when you know you have a special design made for you and with the stamp of your artist.
What do you think makes a good tattoo?
A good technique, good ideas and a great sketch.

I’m opening an art gallery and private tattoo shop in Berlin! It’s called "MACHETE INK GALLERY" and it will be a space for exhibitions, international guest painters and tattoo artists- a place for developing and learning about other people. Olá! Eu comecei como tatuador por acidente. Eu era um garoto rebelde do punk rock que foi expulso da escola e não sabia o que fazer com a minha vida, então depois de alguns anos com trabalhos de merda e alguns anos na universidade, eu não tinha expectativas na Cidade do México. Então eu comprei uma passagem de avião para visitar amigos em Berlim. Tinha um amigo mexicano chamado Iban, que estava trabalhando no "Für Immer". É um estúdio de tatuagens incrível em Berlim. Ele começou a me ensinar tudo sobre tatuagem. Ambos éramos roqueiros punk morando na mesma casa que invadimos, então eu comecei a tatuar todos os meus amigos punks na época. Depois de algum tempo, me dei conta de que precisava de mais habilidades artísticas, então entrei de cabeça nisso, estudando os grandes tatuadores alemães e aprendendo de diferentes artistas.
Seu estilo de tatuagens é um daqueles estilos desconcertantes, que é bonito, porém ao mesmo tempo macabro. De onde surgiu este estilo de trabalho?
Eu sempre fui obcecado por ambos os lados dos seres humanos: Imagens macabras e sombrias, mas também celebrando a vida. Quer dizer, sempre fui o cara que gostava do lado negro: coisas satânicas e pagãs: morte, gótico e black metal. Mas, ao mesmo tempo, eu era um roqueiro punk apaixonado pelo tão feliz “dia dos mortos” mexicano: um dia onde as pessoas no México recordam seus parentes mortos, indo a cemitérios e fazendo festas divertidas, com muitas flores coloridas e imagens engraçadas da morte. Então tenho sido um cara que não se encaixa, mas positivo. Eu estou tentando incorporar ambos os lados disso nas minhas tatuagens! Divertir-se dos elementos sombrios da vida...
Você tem sorte de poder tatuar apenas no seu estilo, ou você ainda tem que se adaptar ao que a maioria dos clientes quer?
Eu comecei tatuando todo tipo de tatuagem sem graça. Quer dizer, tribais, estrelas e escorpiões, como todos os outros tatuadores: tudo de catálogos e nada personalizado. Mas, depois de algum tempo, percebi que as pessoas gostavam dos meus desenhos. Elas gostavam da minha mistura de velha escola e simbolismos sombrios- então decidi que se fizesse meus próprios desenhos, as pessoas ficavam mais satisfeitas com os resultados! Eu só estou tatuando meus desenhos personalizados. Todos os meus clientes estão completamente satisfeitos. Eles me dão total liberdade para desenhar e desenvolvo um tipo de relação com eles, quando nos encontramos pela primeira vez para conversar. Tento descobrir seus sentimentos e o tipo de coisas que eles gostam, para as tatuagens combinarem bem com eles... e isso funciona! Muitos de meus clientes, depois de serem tatuados, criam certa amizade comigo! Eu sou muito grato a eles.
Em seu trabalho, nós vemos muitas mulheres e temas neotradicionais, como é tatuar estes temas e estilos que você gosta?
Eu adorei a velha escola desde que vi pela primeira vez: contornos realçados, cores fortes e contrastes. Mas não quis me definir em um estilo, então comecei a brincar com outros elementos: diferentes gradações de cores, experimentando com certo realismo, incorporando figuras e referências diferentes e os resultados foram os que eu estava buscando. Quando eu desenho mulheres, simplesmente flui. Sou fascinado pela beleza e pelos elementos macabros, então em todos os rostos de mulher eu tento usar diferentes emoções faciais.
Levou um tempo para você desenvolver seu próprio estilo de desenho ou isso veio naturalmente?
É, foi um processo muito difícil. Levou muitos anos de aprendizado. Eu sinto que sempre esteve dentro de mim, mas eu não sabia como desenvolvê-lo. Nunca freqüentei uma escola de arte, então tive que estudar sozinho muitos dos grandes artistas. Por exemplo, eu me aprofundei nos antigos pintores do Renascimento e Barroco, como Caravaggio, Michelangelo, e Leonardo… e, outras vezes, estava estudando tatuadores da velha e da nova escola. Eu pessoalmente acredito que qualquer referência de imagem pode ser adaptada para a nova escola da tatuagem, então frequentemente pego livros novos e consigo inspiração de ilustradores e pintores.
Muitos dos seus desenhos parecem ser feitos para as costas inteiras, isso é algo que você gostaria de fazer mais?
Sempre adorei tatuagens que cobrem as costas todas, mas era difícil imaginá-las com a arte da nova escola. A primeira vez que fiz uma estava com muito medo, mas como um amigo tatuador meu disse, “simplesmente faça tudo enorme”. Ele estava certo! (Risos) É preciso muito planejamento e posicionamento, mas os resultados são surpreendentes. Sou totalmente a favor e tenho alguns trabalhos de costas inteiras em andamento para este ano, mas também adoro braço e peito fechados...e mãos com certeza estão na minha lista de favoritos.
Quais meios você gosta de usar para sua arte no momento?
Eu geralmente pinto com uma mistura de aquarelas e tintas acrílicas. A pintura a óleo é algo que quero aprender logo, e eu pessoalmente acho que em uma pintura é possível misturar todos os tipos de técnicas. O resultado tem mais a ver com a paixão e os sentimentos… mas é, isso também precisa de muito tempo de aprendizado.
Infelizmente, eu não tenho muito tempo para pintar, porque geralmente estou esboçando tatuagens.
De onde você tira inspiração?
Geralmente de livros. Eu sempre estou em livrarias e vendo quadrinhos, procurando novas idéias e referências. Além disso, eu me inspiro em outros tatuadores e, às vezes, na fotografia e em filmes. Eu também descobri que quando tenho momentos ruins ou momentos muito bons, os desenhos saem com mais expressão: é como se a paixão tivesse um papel importante na minha criatividade.
Sabemos que você é originalmente do México, mas agora faz tatuagens em Berlim. Você enxerga alguma diferença no seu modo de trabalhar agora que você está em Berlim?
Sim, muitas diferenças. Desde que estou morando em Berlim, estou continuamente me desenvolvendo, desenhando o tempo todo e tentando melhorar a cada dia. Berlim está cheia de artistas incríveis, e eu sinto que tenho muito a aprender e isso me faz tentar mais. Cada vez que eu vejo tatuagens novas de tatuadores que eu gosto, sinto que tenho que correr para casa e me prender à minha escrivaninha (risos). Além disso, a diferença é que no México, o cenário da tatuagem ainda está muito atrás da Europa, e especialmente de Berlim. A maioria das pessoas em Berlim tem tatuagens, e enormes! Quero dizer, braço fechado, pescoço, mãos e nas costas todas! Uau ...
Você também gosta de viajar para muitos países- você acha que continua aprendendo com suas viagens, ou você vai às convenções para se divertir e não para cuidar de negócios?
É uma mistura. Gosto de ver todos os meus tatuadores preferidos trabalhando, e de conhecer pessoas. Quando as pessoas vêm até a mim, e se depois de verem minhas fotos eles quiserem fazer uma tattoo, fico muito feliz. Eu gosto muito, depois de um dia de trabalho, relaxar e tomar umas cervejas com amigos novos- às vezes é difícil tatuar no dia seguinte depois de uma boa balada (risos)!
O que você mais gosta em suas viagens pelo mundo?
Adoro ver lugares e culturas novas, tentar aprender de pessoas diferentes. Eu me sinto como uma criança quando estou em uma cidade nova: cheiros, gostos, sentimentos diferentes, experimentar comidas novas... geralmente gosto de cidades de praia ou perto da água. A Tailândia, Vietnam e Moscou foram meio que as minhas preferidas, elas eram tão diferentes do resto do mundo. É como uma aventura. Por exemplo, o metrô em Moscou, como você pode saber aonde ir se está tudo em russo? (risos). Tem alguma coisa que você adoraria tatuar no futuro?
Sim… pergunta difícil! (Risos). Durante um tempo eu tentei fazer retratos mais realistas, então adoraria fazê-los no futuro. São muito difíceis, mas bem legal de fazer.
Por outro lado, tem alguma coisa que você nunca tatuaria?
Qualquer coisa de catálogo, ou de uma revista de tatuagem.
Tem se falado muito aqui no Reino Unido no momento sobre o que torna uma tatuagem boa, e que muitas pessoas do público em geral não entendem realmente o que é uma boa tatuagem, você concorda?
Sim. Quando eu não era tatuador, era difícil para mim enxergar as diferenças que deixavam uma tatuagem boa, mas eu recomendaria às pessoas a sempre procurar um trabalho personalizado, e um tatuador que combine melhor com eles. Você sempre se sentirá bem quando sabe que tem um desenho feito especialmente para você, e com a marca do seu tatuador.
O que você acha que torna uma tatuagem boa?
Uma boa técnica, boas idéias e um ótimo esboço.
Já tem algum plano incrível para 2011?
Eu estou abrindo uma galeria de arte e um estúdio de tatuagem em Berlim! Chama-se “MACHETE INK GALLERY” e será um espaço para exibições, pintores internacionais convidados e tatuadores- um local para o desenvolvimento e a aprendizagem sobre outras pessoas.
