This foundational course for teaching Chinese as a foreign language is split into four units. The first unit is comprised of reflection on students’ personal views on teaching a foreign language, discussion on methods of foreign language teaching, and the guiding principles upon which educational concepts are established. In the second unit, students will learn a range of skills necessary to plan and practice interactive teaching, including teaching techniques, compiling lesson plans, designing language activities, and classroom management. The third unit focuses on the practice of theories of teaching speaking, listening, reading, and writing, as applied in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The fourth unit consists of discussion of Chinese teaching case studies and research on teachers’ operations and practices.
Teaching methods: reading discussions, teaching analyses, case studies, classroom teaching practice.
Evaluation methods: class participation, teaching practice, operational research design, written work.

A native English speaker, I am a recent graduate of Middlebury College (USA) with a joint degree in Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. I have lived and studied in Peru and the People's Republic of China, and studied at Middlebury's Summer Chinese School on a Katherine Wasserman Davis Critical Languages Fellowship. I have taught Chinese at Middlebury College, and am currently employed at the Middlebury Summer Chinese School as a Bilingual Assistant.
