Source text - English Department X is an attractive option for dedicated cyclical exposures, though we would like to see greater stability at the fund manager level.
This fund provides exposure to three closely intertwined areas: industrials, energy and materials. It is driven in part by the intense stock research undertaken by the firm's global army of investment analysts: 81 provide coverage within the fund's investible universe. The portfolio manager is charged with ensuring this wealth of research is utilised effectively. Joining the firm in late 2003, he has followed the typical X career path. The portfolio manager started as an analyst, gaining experience across a range of sectors before taking charge here in April 2008. As this is X’s first stint as fund manager, as such it's natural to have a degree of caution about him. Even so, we are impressed by his passion and his knowledge of not only his portfolio but also the major factors driving the sector during these uncertain times. We also note that he most recently served as a basic materials analyst, giving him highly relevant experience.
The investment process is robust, using a mix of bottom-up stock research and macro considerations (GDP/currency shifts and commodity price movements). X is also cognizant that long-term investment themes play an important role in this part of the economy. Examples||| here include constrained oil supply, particularly for non-OPEC producers and the influence of governments in the capex cycle (this is even more relevant given government responses in the current global economic slowdown).
Our main concern here is manager tenure. Over the course of this decade, the fund has had no fewer than 6 different managers. Whilst we understand the logic that sector funds are often seen as a proving ground for portfolio managers destined for core funds, this is a less than perfect scenario for investors. The fund's TER is also about 10bp higher than the category median, excluding ETFs and index funds, at time of writing--that's not awful by any means, but we think department X could do better given its scale.
On a more general level, investors should be aware of the increased volatility that goes hand in hand with investing in narrow-based sector funds such as this. Indeed, while the fund beat nearly 80% of its peers in 2008, it still lost 44%. While the strategy is an intelligent way to gain dedicated cyclicals exposure, it should only be a small portion within a well-diversified core portfolio.
All of that said, this is an attractive industrials offering in our view. We would prefer it if department X quit rotating managers through, but the deep resources here have shown they can offset the level of turnover, and we are comforted enough by X's prior experience and robust process to give the fund a rating of Superior.

Het investeringsproces is robuust, gebruik makende van een mix van ‘bottom-up’ aandelenonderzoek en macro-overwegingen (BBP/valutaverschuivingen en prijsveranderingen van goederen). X is zich tevens bewust dat lange termijn investeringsthema's een belangrijke rol spelen binnen dit onderdeel van de economie. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn onder meer beperkingen in de olietoelevering, met name voor niet-OPEC fabrikanten, en de invloed van overheden op de capex cyclus (dit is zelfs relevanter als gevolg van overheidsreacties in de huidige wereldwijde economische teruggang).
Onze grootste bezorgdheid hier is de lengte van de management dienstverbanden. Binnen het huidige decennium heeft het fonds niet minder dan zes verschillende managers gehad. We begrijpen de logica dat sectorfondsen vaak door portfoliomanagers gezien worden als terrein om zichzelf te bewijzen en vervolgens door te groeien naar kernfondsen. Echter is dit voor investeerders geen perfect scenario. Op het moment van schrijven is de TER van het fonds ook ongeveer 10bp hoger dan de mediaan van de categorie, afgezien van ETF en indexfondsen. Dit is geen slecht resultaat, echter denken wij dat afdeling X op basis van haar schaal beter kan presteren.
Op een meer algemeen niveau, zouden investeerders bewust moeten zijn van de toegenomen volatiliteit dat samengaat met investeringen in nauwgezette sectorfondsen als deze. Ook al versloeg het fonds haar peers met 80% in 2008, het verloor nog altijd 44%. Waar de strategie een intelligente manier is om constante exposure te verwerven, zal het enkel een klein onderdeel moeten uitmaken van een goed gespreide kernportfolio.
Dit alles gezegd te hebben, is dit naar onze opinie een aantrekkelijk aanbod op het gebied van industrie. We zouden hier de voorkeur aan geven wanneer afdeling X stopt met het vele roteren van haar managers. Desalniettemin hebben de diepgaande bronnen van het fonds bewezen het omzetniveau te kunnen compenseren en de opgedane ervaring van X in combinatie met het robuuste proces geven het fonds de inschaling van ‘Superieur’.
