Source text - Polish Późną wiosną i latem różnorodność kwitnących roślin jest znacznie większa. Licznie rosną tu np. rdest wężownik, niezapominajka błotna, groszek łąkowy, koniczyna białoróżowa, przytulia bagienna, ostrożeń łąkowy, sit członowaty, sit rozpierzchły, kuklik zwisły, wiązówka błotna, a także trujące jaskry: ostry i rozłogowy. Pospolicie występuje tu także kozłek lekarski – jedna z wielu roślin leczniczych rosnących na Łąkach, bardziej znana jako waleriana. Gatunek ten jest powszechnie stosowany w przemyśle zielarskim, jednak aby nie zagrażać dzikim populacjom, surowiec leczniczy pozyskuje się wyłącznie z roślin pochodzących z uprawy. Największe stężenie substancji leczniczych znajduje się bowiem w podziemnych częściach tej rośliny (kłącze, korzeń), których pozyskanie wiąże się najczęściej ze zniszczeniem osobnika. Ziele kozłka ma łagodne działanie uspokajające i ułatwiające zasypianie, a gotowe preparaty można kupić w każdej aptece lub sklepie zielarskim (np. tzw. krople walerianowe).
Translation - English In late spring and in summer the variety of flowering plants is considerably greater. They include large numbers of bistort, water forget-me-not, meadow pea, alsike clover, fen bedstraw, brook thistle, jointleaf rush, common rush, water avens, meadowsweet, and the poisonous ranunculuses: the meadow buttercup and the creeping crowfoot. Among the many medicinal plants that grow in the meadows, all-heal, better known as valerian, is also common. It is widely used in the herbal medicines industry, yet in order not to threaten the wild population, the therapuetic raw material is only extracted from cultivated plants. Indeed, the greatest concentration of medicinal substances is found in the underground parts of these plants (rhizomes, roots), so that extracting them usually means destroying whole plants. Valerian herb has a mild relaxant effect and helps us to fall asleep. Preparations can be bought ready-made in any chemist’s or herbalist’s shop (valerian drops, for example).

Source text - Polish Obecność wody sprawia, że na terenie Łąk możemy również obserwować kokoszkę, perkozka, a przy odrobinie szczęścia zalatującego z pobliskiego starorzecza Wisły bączka – najmniejszą, nieliczną w Polsce czaplę, wymienioną w Polskiej Czerwonej Księdze Zwierząt, chronioną, poza prawem polskim, Dyrektywą Ptasią. Ptak ten prowadzi skryty tryb życia, świetnie maskuje się na tle trzcin, a zaniepokojony zamiera w pozycji z wyciągniętymi pionowo do góry szyją i dziobem. Innymi gatunkami ptaków chronionych prawem unijnym, które mamy szansę usłyszeć lub zobaczyć na terenie Łąk, są derkacz (korzystający z Łąk Nowohuckich niestety już jedynie podczas migracji), odzywający się charakterystycznym twardym „kreks-kreks”, oraz dużo pospolitszy w naszym kraju gąsiorek, znany z nietuzinkowego patentu na spiżarnię, nabijający nadmiar upolowanego pokarmu na ciernie krzewów lub druty. Podmokły teren łąk sprzyja też obecności dziwonii, która wędrówkę zimową odbywa do południowej części Azji, a nie − jak większość ptaków − do Afryki. Przepięknie ubarwione samce z charakterystyczną szkarłatną piersią śpiewają na szczycie krzewu fletowym brzmieniem, który może nieco przypominać głos innego pięknego gatunku – wilgi.
Translation - English The presence of water on the Meadows also allows us to see the common moorhen, little grebe and, if we are very lucky, the little bittern as it alights from the old river bed of the Vistula nearby. It is the smallest member of the family Ardeidae (herons) in Poland, which has few representatives there. It is listed in the Polish Red Book of Animals and protected by the Birds Directive, which is the oldest EU legislation on the environment, as well as by Polish law.
The life of the little bittern, which blends in perfectly against the background of the reeds, is a stealthy, secretive one. If it is disturbed, it freezes in position with its neck and beak stretched vertically upwards. Other bird species protected by EU law that we might see or hear on the Meadows include the corncrake, with its distinctive, loud and grating krek-krek (unfortunately it only descends on the Meadows during migration) and the red-backed shrike, which is much more common in Poland. It is noted for its ingenious version of a larder, which is to impale prey on the thorns of bushes or on small, sharp twigs.
The Meadows’ wet terrain favours the pesence too of the common rosefinch, which, unlike most birds, makes its winter migration to the southern part of Asia rather than to Africa. The beautifully coloured males with their distinctive scarlet breasts sing from the tops of bushes with a flute-like sound that can be somewhat reminiscent of the voice of another beautiful species, the Eurasian golden oriole.

Source text - Polish IDEA LEŚNEGO GOSPODARSTWA POLEGA NA TYM, ABY NIE POZYSKIWAĆ Z LASU WIĘCEJ DREWNA NIŻ GO PRZYRASTA. Dzięki temu jego zapas odkładany w leśnym magazynie stale się powiększa. Co więcej, pozyskiwanie drewna dostosowywane jest do naturalnych cyklów rozwoju lasu i sprzyja jego wzrostowi. Drewno z lasów zagospodarowanych przez Lasy Państwowe jest opatrzone certyfikatami najwyższej jakości, ajego produkcja jest przyjazna środowisku.
W Polsce większość domów buduje się przy użyciu betonu, którego produkcja jest jednym z ważniejszych źródeł emisji CO2. Alternatywą może być użycie do tego celu drewna, które „magazynuje” węgiel z dwutlenku węgla pochłanianego przez drzewa w procesie fotosyntezy, łagodząc tym samym zmiany klimatyczne. Drewno jest przyjazne i łatwo poddaje się obróbce. Poza tym produkty z drewna podlegają szybkiemu i naturalnemu rozkładowi. Drewniane domy świetnie izolują ciepło i „oddychają”, a także regulują wilgotność, sprawiając, że we wnętrzu utrzymuje się przyjazny dla użytkownika mikroklimat. W porównaniu do innych technologii buduje się je ekspresowo, a sam proces jest w dużej mierze niezależny od pogody.
Translation - English FOREST MANAGEMENT MEANS NOT TAKING MORE TIMBER FROM THE FORESTS THAN THEY CAN GROW. In this way the amount of timber in the forest stores is always increasing. What is more, timber is taken according to the forests’ natural cycles and helps them grow. Timber from woodland managed by the State Forests, which is produced in an environmentally friendly way, is certified as being of the highest quality.
The majority of houses in Poland are built using cement, which unfortunately is a major source of carbon dioxide emissions. Using wood, which “stores” the carbon from the carbon dioxide that trees absorb by photosynthesis, could be an alternative that reduces the effects of climate change. Timber is friendly and easy to work with. Timber products also decay naturally and quickly. Timber houses hold heat very well but are also able to “breathe” and not become too damp. This means that their microclimate stays pleasant for the people who live in them. They are much quicker to build than houses using other materials and building is not delayed so often by bad weather.

I am a qualified and experienced translator who has been working from PL-EN for twenty-two years, including two years as in-house translator at Comarch, Kraków. I am a graduate of one Polish (Uniwersytet Jagielloński, I followed the course in Polish) and two UK universities (Bristol, Birmingham).
