Source text - English There were already songs about the Pont d’Avignon way back in the 15th century, however we have lost all trace of these songs except for one, which was sung for weddings in Normandy. These wedding songs were called “pillow songs” for they were traditionally sung to the newlyweds as they entered their nuptial bedroom. One of these songs
about the bridge, brought by French emigrants to Canada still exists in Canada. As for the well-known children’s round, Sur le Pont d’Avignon, it was originally composed in the 1899’s by Adolphe Adam, and was sung at the Opéra Comique in Paris on 2 February 1853, in a
play called The Deaf Man or The Full Inn, which was set in Avignon.
Then an operetta entitled Sur le Pont d’Avignon, which also featured the popular song, enjoyed resounding success. Since then, the song has made its way throughout the entire world, and has added to Avignon’s fame and reputation more than any advertising could have ever done !
Translation - Italian Esistevano molte canzoni sul Ponte di Avignone nel corso del 15° secolo, tuttavia se ne sono perse le tracce; eccetto di una, che solitamente era cantata durante i matrimoni in Normandia. Questa canzone, come una "ninna nanna" era tradizionalmente cantata agli sposi quando si apprestavano ad entrare nel letto nuziale. Una di queste canzoni, con soggetto il ponte, venne portata da emigranti francesi in Canada, dove ancora sopravvive. Una delle più conosciute melodie, che normalmente i bambini cantano in girotondo, Sur le Pont D'Avignon fu composta originariamente nel 1899 da Adolphe Adam, e presentata all'Operà Comique di Parigi nel febbraio 1853 in una rappresentazione chiamata Il Sordo o The Full Inn ambientata ad Avignone.
