Source text - German Parallel zur Beschaffung der BR 4000 wurde der Oberbau der Strecken verstärkt. Krauss-Maffei baute bis Ende 1966 die ersten zehn Exemplare. Die übrigen 22 Fahrzeuge stellte Babcock & Wilcox ab Juni 1967 auf Lizenzbasis her.
Wie schon die Maschinen der Baureihe V 200.1 der Deutschen Bundesbahn waren die spanischen Lokomotiven mit zwei Motoren hinter den Endführerständen versehen, jedoch mit einer Gesamtleistung von 2942 kW wesentlich stärker motorisiert. Die harten klimatischen Einsatzbedingungen erforderten eine große und leistungsfähige Kühlanlage. Daher wurde die Baureihe 4000 gegenüber der V 200.1 verlängert und mit anders gestalteten Seitenwänden versehen.

Le locomotive spagnole furono dotate di due motori posti dietro le cabine di guida, come già avvenne con la serie V 200.1 delle ferrovie tedesche, ma la potenza complessiva di 2942 kW le rendeva molto più motorizzate. Le rigide condizioni climatiche richiedevano un impianto di raffreddamento voluminoso ed efficiente. Per questo motivo la serie 4000 era più lunga rispetto alla V 200.1 e le pareti laterali furono costruite in maniera differente.
