Sie führt in einen Teufelskreis von Verschuldung, und großem seelischen Leid, belastet Beziehungen und die Betroffenen finden kaum adäquate Hilfe, weil es bisher nur wenige Psychotherapeuten gibt, die im Bereich Sexsucht spezialisiert sind.
Das Thema ist in den Fokus der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion gerückt, da sich immer mehr Menschen in den vergangenen Jahren an Therapeuten gewandt haben, um Hilfe zu finden. Allerdings gibt es viel zu wenige Psychotherapeuten, die für das Gebiet spezialisiert sind. Sexsucht soll im neuen US-amerikanischen Diagnosemanual DSM V in diesem Jahr zum ersten Mal als eigenständige Störung genannt werden.

Sexual addiction is comparable to pathological gambling or alcohol addiction, and can have drastic effects on addicts' lives and relationships. Such an addiction leads to a vicious circle of debt, psychological distress and strained relationships, and the addicts can rarely find adequate help, since so few psychotherapists specialise in this area.
The topic of hypersexuality has recently moved into the academic spotlight as more and more individuals have sought therapists' help with their addiction. Nonetheless, there are still too few psychotherapists who specialise in this area. This year, the American Psychiatric Association is considering adding sexual addiction to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM V) as a psychiatric disorder in its own right.
