Source text - English “Unbelievable”, “bizarre”, “surreal”, “dreamlike”, “out of this world”… These are just a few words you can’t help using to describe the places featured here. A lot of this scenery resembles something out of a surrealist painting. Some of this awesome imagery looks like scenes from sci-fi films. Many of them give you the feeling that they are images captured from another world.
I firmly believe you must visit these truly amazing locations before you die.
Salar De Uyuni – Bolivia
Salar De Uyuni is the largest salt plant in the world. During the rainy season in Bolivia, it turns into a gigantic mirror. Its span is so huge and reflective that it is actually used for the calibration of satellites. The Salar was formed through the centuries after several prehistoric lakes joined together to form one humongous body of water.
Sea of Stars, Vaadhoo Island – Maldives
During daylight, it looks like any other beach, but once the sun goes down this place comes to life! It turns into a spectacular sight at night. The bioluminescent phytoplankton look like hundreds of bright stars glistening like a starry sky as the night grows old.
Tianzi Mountains – China
These uniquely tall and thin mountains are so alien-like that they were used in James Cameron’s “Avatar.” Formed underwater 380 million years ago, the flow destroyed surrounding sandstone, leaving only resilient stone pillars. Some of the columns have reached over 4,000 feet above sea level.

Source text - English “Children need to have the experience of an adult saying no,” says Jane Cassidy of the
Association of Child Psychotherapists and joint chair of the Child and Adolescent
Psychotherapist Division of the Tavistock Society. “If you always give in, they don’t learn that
somebody can stay firm, so when they become young teenagers and adults they don’t have the
capability to say no to themselves when they are under peer pressure in terms of drugs,
delinquency or sex.” The problem, teachers, psychologists and parents agree, is that when it
comes to discipline, parents are hopelessly ill-disciplined. They tell their children that they
should not do something or cannot have something that they want, but cave in to the child’s
protests.
Dr Tanya Byron, clinical psychologist and Times2 columnist, says that dealing with this issue
has become “the spine of my clinic. The majority of people I see really can’t say no to their
children or can’t set boundaries. They can’t follow through to a consequence after saying ‘no’.
Children don’t have a sense of who is in charge so they take charge themselves.”
The effect of parental ineffectiveness is all too obvious in society – nowhere more so than in
schools. Earlier this year I spent a week at Banbury School, a comprehensive in Oxfordshire,
shadowing the head teacher, Dr Fiona Hammans, a dynamic and nationally respected teacher
who has been responsible for the education and wellbeing of thousands of children. She had no
doubts about where many of the school’s discipline problems originated.
“You’ve got a generation of parents that does not believe in punishing their kids. They say
‘you’re grounded for a year’. And the kid cries and then they say ‘Oh all right, then!’ A whole lot
of parents don’t know how to control their kids. The kids are in charge.” Hammans certainly
does know how to say no, and back it up. But her point was that what she said was far less
important than what parents said and did. Hammans even described the extraordinary situation
where parents were not attending parent-teacher evenings because “kids don’t want their
parents coming up here”.

Source text - English It has also collected plenty of supermassive black holes, which boast the mass of millions or even billions of stars. Physicists believe supermassive black holes are at the centre of almost all galaxies, including our own. However, it’s not entirely clear where these black holes came from. One theory is they were once run-of-the-mill stellar black holes that steadily swallowed stars, gas and space dust over billions of years, growing ever bigger, like a cosmic snowball rolling downhill. There’s a problem with this theory, though. While we see clear evidence of stellar black holes and supermassive black holes in the universe, there seem to be far fewer middleweight intermediate black holes. If black holes get to be supermassive by growing steadily, you’d expect to see a full range of black holes at various stages of growth.
Another possibility is that the younger universe had more small galaxies than it does today, and that while some of this went on to form larger galaxies, others collapsed into supermassive black holes. Yet another theory is that the Big Bang produced supermassive black holes, and they have been around as long as the universe. In any case, once positioned at the centre of a galaxy, the supermassive black hole will continually add to its mass by engulfing any gas, space dust and stars that get too close.
The supermassive black hole is a big part of the great mass that forms the gravitational centre of the galaxy. In the same way the Sun pulls on the planets in our Solar System, this great mass is pulling everything in the galaxy towards it. As in our Solar System, the rotational movement of all this matter counteracts the inward pull of gravity, keeping everything from careening into the black hole.
It’s conceivable that a black hole could swallow up another black hole – or, looking at it another way, that two black holes could merge together. We have never directly observed this happening, however, but physicists expect it would be an awesome encounter, releasing huge amounts of energy and sending rippling space-time disturbances called gravity waves throughout the universe.
Scientists once believed that black holes might live forever. But in 1974, Stephen Hawking theorised that they slowly lose energy through and odd form of radiation, dubbed ‘Hawking radiation’. Eventually, this will cause the black hole to shrink and die out. It’s an incredibly slow process, though. Black holes are likely to be the last things left in the universe, trillions of years from now.

DUNGU, Democratic Republic of the Congo, May 9 (UNHCR) –
Jules* lies in a hospital bed in a provincial town in north-east Democratic Republic of the Congo. Recovering from gunshot wounds to the leg and shoulder, he's a recent victim of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in Orientale province.
But at least he's alive and free. The LRA fighters have built up a reputation over the past two decades for random violence, including murder and rape, and for abducting people from the villages that they terrorize. In recent years they have fled their home bases in Uganda and moved to neighbouring countries, including the Congo and Central African Republic.
In Jules's case, the LRA fighters came to his village with the dawn. "They arrived [in early April] at 5am and started shooting. I tried to run out of the house, but one of the LRA rebels entered and, without saying a word, he opened fire," the 55-year-old farmer said.
The next thing he remembered was being in a UN peacekeeping base before being medevaced on a Médecins Sans Frontières plane to the town of Dungu, about seven kilometres to the south. He's been told he will have to spend several weeks recovering.
But, like many other recent victims of LRA attacks in this corner of the country, he despairs of ever being able to return home.

Jules es una víctima reciente del Ejército de Resistencia del Señor (LRA, por sus siglas en inglés) en la Provincia Oriental de la República Democrática del Congo. Se encuentra en una cama de hospital de una ciudad de provincias al noroeste del Congo, recuperándose de dos disparos recibidos en la pierna y en el hombro, respectivamente.
Al menos sigue vivo y es libre. El LRA se ha construido una reputación a lo largo de las dos últimas décadas a base de violencia indiscriminada, cometiendo asesinatos y violaciones, y secuestrando a gente en los pueblos y aldeas en los que siembran el terror. En los últimos años han abandonado sus bases en Uganda y se han trasladado a países vecinos, incluyendo el Congo y la República Centroafricana.
En el caso de Jules, los soldados del LRA llegaron a su aldea con el alba. "Llegaron (a principios de abril) a las 5 de la mañana y empezaron a disparar. Intenté salir de la casa, pero uno de los rebeldes del LRA entró y, sin mediar palabra, abrió fuego", contaba el granjero de 55 años.
Lo siguiente que recordaba era estar en una de las bases para el mantenimiento de la paz de la ONU, antes de ser trasladado en un avión de Médicos Sin Fronteras hasta Dungu, unos siete kilómetros más al sur. Le han dicho que pasarán varias semanas hasta que se recupere. Sin embargo, teme no poder regresar nunca a su hogar, al igual que muchas otras víctimas recientes del LRA en esta región del país.
