The attention that has been paid to the Martyrdom of Perpetua in recent times has focused on Perpetua' s own character, and her achievement as a martyr. So Marie- Louise von Franz discussed her psychology from a Jungian point of view, and Mary Lefkowitz analysed her relationship with her father and spoke of her death as «a political act against her environment». A woman author is a rara avis in classical Latin literature, and Perpetua, when she wrote about her impending martyrdom in A.D. 203, did the twentieth century a doubly good turn in that she also wrote about her dreams. So perhaps it's natural that modern comment has concentrated on the deep-set inner motivations that impelled her.
us something about her and the world she lived in. There are significant points about Perpetua' s upbringing and education which emerge from her Martyrdom, and which invite comment of a broader kind than a discussion that was confined to Perpetua herself could allow.
Perpetua wrote. Though some scholars have described Perpetua' s work as a
«prison diary», I'd argue that she wasn't just keeping a private notebook, but that she was writing with a view to the eventual production of something very like the document we read now. That's the import of the editor's comment on carrying out her «sacred trust» by adding the story of her death in the amphitheatre. So she planned to have her story read aloud, in her own words, in Church at the services where her martyrdom was commemorated.

L’attenzione dedicata al Martirio di Perpetua negli ultimi tempi si è concentrata sul carattere di Perpetua e sulla sua realizzazione in quanto martire. Marie-Louise von Franz ha parlato della sua psicologia da un punto di vista junghiano e Mary Lefkowitz ha analizzato la sua relazione con il padre ed ha parlato della sua morte come di “un atto politico contro la società”. Una donna autrice è un rara avis nella letteratura latina e Perpetua, quando ha scritto del suo martirio imminente, nel 203 D.C., ha fatto un doppio favore al ventesimo secolo scrivendo anche dei suoi sogni. E’ perciò naturale che la critica moderna si sia concentrata sulle motivazioni più profonde che l’hanno guidata.
In questo saggio si vuole dimostrare che non è solo la psiche di Perpetua a darci delle informazioni sulla stessa santa, ma anche il mondo in cui viveva. Ci sono punti importanti riguardo l’educazione e l’istruzione di Perpetua che emergono dal Martirio e che invitano ad un commento più approfondito piuttosto che ad una discussione confinata alla sola Perpetua.
Perpetua scriveva. Sebbene alcuni studiosi abbiano descritto il lavoro di Perpetua come un “diario della prigionia”, si potrebbe opporre che questa non stava solo tenendo un diario, ma lo stava scrivendo in vista di un’opera molto simile a quella che leggiamo oggi. Questa è l’importanza del commento del curatore nell’eseguire il suo “santo compito”, ovvero aggiungere la storia della morte della santa nell’anfiteatro. Perpetua dunque aveva ipotizzato che la sua storia venisse letta ad alta voce, con le sue parole, durante la messa, in chiesa, dove il suo martirio sarebbe stato ricordato.
