English to Portuguese: A classic work of environmental philosophy General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Philosophy
Source text - English To be sure, the shaman's ecological function, his or her role as intermediary between human society and the land, is not always obvious at first blush, even to a sensitive observer. We see the sorcerer being called upon to cure an ailing tribesman of his sleeplessness, or perhaps simply to locate some missing goods; we witness him entering into trance and sending his awareness into other dimensions in search of insight and aid. Yet we should not be so ready to interpret these dimensions as "supernatural," nor to view them as realms entirely "internal" to the personal psyche of the practitioner. For it is likely that the "inner world" of our Western psychological experience, like the supernatural heaven of Christian belief, originates in the loss of our ancestral reciprocity with the animate earth. When the animate powers that surround us are suddenly construed as having less significance than ourselves, when the generative earth is abruptly defined as a determinate object devoid of its own sensations and feelings, then the sense of a wild and multiplicitous otherness (in relation to which human existence has always oriented itself) must migrate, either into a supersensory heaven beyond the natural world, or else into the human skull itself - the only allowable refuge, in this world, for what is ineffable and unfathomable.

I have developed a keen interest in languages from an early age. Beginning with the learning of English in my early youth, I later on decided to study Philosophy at the University, dedicating myself particularly to the fields of Philosophy of Language, Linguistics, and Logic, as well as the study of other languages such as Ancient Greek, Latin, and German.
Professional experience
I have been working as full-time translator in various English to Brazilian Portuguese freelance projects since February 2013. During this time, I translated over 1,000,000 words in hundreds of projects for various clients, as well as proofread/edited hundreds of translations. My work experience has been focused on the education and health sectors, but I also concluded a diverse range of projects that include the translation of games, subtitles for feature films, workers' CVs, and several legal agreements and contracts.
Other translation projects
From 2014 to 2016 I contributed actively to Survival International, the global movement for tribal peoples, as volunteer translator. Together with fellow philosopher Murilo Seabra, I have also worked intensely on the translation and editing ofseveral essays published by internationally renowned environmental philosophers. The translations are intended to become part of the first environmental philosophy anthology in Brazilian Portuguese, a project that still seeks its final editorial resolution.
What can I do for you?
Translations in the Education and Health sectors make up the bulk of my work over the years. More recently, I have also taken up the challenge of subtitling, translating subtitles for dozens of feature and short films, documentaries, and animated movies.Besides, Philosophy, Environment/Ecology, Social Sciences, and Economics are fields of expertise that relate to my background education and in which I have a continuous, engaging work both as author and translator. I would be specially prepared to translate texts in these fields, yet my day-to-day professional work is far more varied. You can check my WIWO entries to see on what kinds of projects I am working at the moment.
