Source text - German Als auch der Philosoph Voltaire im Mai 1778 sterben musste, sollen hilfreiche Freunde an seinem Krankenbett gefragt haben, ob er etwas wünsche. Man dachte wohl an ein Glas Wasser oder Wein oder an ein Kissen unter dem Rücken. Voltaire aber antwortete: „ Noch einmal durch den Garten von Schwetzingen gehen“.
Jeder von uns, der noch nicht gestorben ist, kann sich diesen Wunsch Voltaires erfüllen. Denn der Garten von Schwetzingen zwischen Heidelberg und Mannheim in Süddeutschland gelegen ist schöner denn je.
Voltaire besuchte die Sommerresidenz Schwetzingen 1753 und 1758. Dort entstand auch sein Hauptwerk Candide. Gastgeber Voltaires war der mächtige Kurfürst Carl Theodor von der Pfalz. Nachdem Heidelberg mit dem berühmten Schloss und Renaissancegarten 1693 von den Truppen Ludwigs XIV. zerstört worden war, verlegte der Pfalzer Kurfürst seinen Sitz nach Mannheim. Dort hatten die Kurfürsten nach der Verwüstung des alten Heidelbergs eine neue Stadt geplant, mit einer Barockresidenz, die eines der größten Schlösser Europas werden sollte. Hier bestand aber keine Möglichkeit, einen Garten a là Versailles zu bauen, da der Rhein auf der einen Seite und die Festungsanlagen auf der anderen Seite nur begrenzten Raum boten. So entschied sich Carl Theodor in Schwetzingen, zwischen Heidelberg und Mannheim gelegen, in den feuchten Wiesen des Rheintals, einen großen Garten als Sommerresidenz anzulegen. Nicht das Schloss, sondern der Garten sollte die Hauptrolle spielen. In der Anlage spiegeln sich en miniature die großen Ideen des Gartens von Versailles wieder. Symmetrisch angelegte Kanäle und Wege teilen das Gelände in blumengeschmückte Parterre- und Heckenzonen auf. Der Garten sollte auch weit in die Ferne führen. In den letzten Jahren seiner Entstehung wurde auch noch ein englischer Landschaftsgarten hinzugefügt. Für diese Pläne suchte sich der Kurfürst Carl Theodor den lothringischen Architekten, Nicolas de Pigage (1723-1796), aus. Er stammte aus Lunéville, wo der berühmte polnische König, Stanislaus I. Leszczyński, Schwiegervater Ludwig XV, einen weltberühmten Garten nach Pariser Vorbild gebaut hatte. Als dieser Anlage nach dem Tod des Königs aufgelöst wurde, kaufte der Kurfürst mit seinem Architekten Pigage eine Reihe von Skulpturen, die dann in Schwetzingen aufgestellt wurden und heute noch vorhanden sind.
Der Schwetzinger Garten selbst besitzt unzählige Pavillons, 130 Skulpturen, künstliche römische Ruinen und Aquädukte, Brücken, ein Theater, eine Orangerie und sogar eine groß angelegte Moschee. Das Schönste aber ist die Anlage des Badehauses, die Pigage für den persönlichen Gebrauch des Kurfürsten entwarf.
Carl Theodor, ein Zeitgenosse Friedrich des Großen, führte wenige Kriege und erbte im Laufe seines Lebens ein Land nach dem anderen, zum Schluss sogar das bedeutende Herzogtum Bayern. Friedrich der Große bezeichnete ihn als „faules Glücksschwein“, weil er mehr Land erbte, als der preußische König durch Kriege erobern konnte. Der pfälzische Kurfürst war aber keineswegs faul. Er regierte sein Land diszipliniert, sammelte Kunst, baute eine große Bibliothek auf, errichtete ein Theater und ein Opernhaus, und unterhielt eines der größten Orchester Europas. Carl Theodor liebte sein Volk und ganz besonders seine vielen Mätressen.
Im Schwetzingen galt dem sogenanten Badehaus und den umliegenden Gärten seine besondere Zuneigung. Durch Hecken geschützt, lag dieser wunderbare Pavillon, in dem sich der aufgeklärte Fürst vollständig privat zurückziehen konnte, inmitten der Anlage. Carl Theodor hatte sicherlich einen Hang zum aufgeklärten Orientalismus, denn nicht weit von dem Badehaus lag die große Moschee, die einem beim ersten Anblick an Mozarts Oper, die Entführung aus dem Serail, erinnert. Mozart gehörte übrigens ebenfalls zu den Besuchern des Kurfürsten. Er hielt sich mehrere Monate in der Residenzstadt auf und gewann fruchtbare Anstösse durch das Musikleben.
Treten wir durch ein Heckentor und nähern uns dem Badehaus von Osten. Dort empfängt ein ovales, durch Säulen und Obelisken geschmücktes Vestibül den Besucher. Eine Tür führt in einen ovalen Salon mit Marmorboden und einem großen ovalen Deckenbild, auf dem Aurora, die Morgenröte, die Nacht vertreibt, eine allegorische Verklärung des Kurfürsten, der Licht bringt nach der Zeit der Dunkelheit. In diesem ovalen Saal fanden ab und zu Konzerte statt. Der Fürst, der selbst die Querflöte spielte, begleitete das Orchester. Oft aber musizierte er ganz alleine in diesem herrlichen Raum mit seiner hervorragenden Akustik. Geht man nach links, betritt man einen kleinen Vorraum, der auf der einen Seite wiederum zum Bad und auf der anderen Seite zu einem kleinen Schlafzimmer führt. Das Bad ist wohl das schönste seiner Art aus dem 18. Jhdt. Es ist wie eine kleine Therme, in die man durch Treppen in das heiße Wasser hinabsteigt. Reicher Wandschmuck aus Stuck, der in verschiedenen Formen allegorisch auf das Element Wasser hinweist, Spiegelfelder, Decken und Wandfelder aus Halbedelstein, die an eine Grotte erinnern, fügen sich zu einem unvergesslichen Ensemble. Pigage war ein Anhänger der „architecture parlante“, der sprechenden Architektur. Aller Wandschmuck sollte auf die heilende Wirkung des Wassers hinweisen. Wurde es dem Kurfürsten zu kühl, konnte er an kleinen Schlangenköpfen drehen, um das Bad mit heißem Wasser aus einem nahegelegenen Kesselhaus aufzufüllen. Nach dem Bad konnte er entweder durch eine Tür ins Freie gehen oder durch eine andere Tür das kleine Schlafzimmer betreten, in dem das aufgeschlagene Bett auf ihn wartete.
Auf der anderen Seite des ovalen Vestibüls sind zwei weitere Salons: Das kleine Schreibzimmer, das mit herrlichen Landschaftsbildern des Hofmalers Ferdinand Kobell verziert ist und das mit chinesischen Tapeten ausgeschmückte Teezimmer. In seinem Refugium konnte der Kurfürst baden, schlafen, schreiben, essen oder musizieren.
Waren diese menschlichen Grundbedürfnisse gestillt, konnte der Kurfürst aus dem ovalen Saal in den Garten wandern. Er besteht aus einem lang gezogenen Treillagengang, an dessen Ende eine Mauer steht, die mit einer Trompe l’oeil Landschaft bemalt ist. Sie zeigt einen in die Ferne fliessenden Fluss und erweckt den Eindruck unerreichbarer Weite. Dieser Gang wird bezeichnenderweise „das Ende der Welt“ genannt. In seiner Mitte steht das sogenannte Vogelbad. Ein aus Bronze gegossener Uhu sitzt am Boden auf seiner Beute. Über ihm auf dem Treillagenzirkel hocken die Vögel des Tages und spucken in weitem Bogen Wasser auf den Räuber der Nacht. Seitlich des Brunnens stehen vier kleine Volieren, in denen auch heute noch heute lebendige Vögel zwitschern.
Nicht weit von dieser zauberhaften Anlage liegt die große Orangerie. Im Frühjahr verwandeln hunderte von Orangen- und Zitronenbäumen die geheizten Räumen in einen orientalisch duftenden Garten. Im Sommer wurden die Orangenbäume in ein separates Gartenfeld gestellt, das wiederum von einem kleinen Kanal umrandet ist. Heute beherbergt die Orangerie eine Sammlung von Originalskulpturen, deren Kopien im Garten stehen. In dem nahegelegenen Rokokotheater finden seit 1952 jedes Frühjahr Festspiele statt mit Konzerten und Opern in historischer Aufführungspraxis, die Schwetzingen, wie zu Zeiten Karl Theodors, zu einem musikalischen Mittelpunkt machen.
Läuft man in der Abenddämmerung durch den Park, kann man mit ein bisschen Fantasie noch seine Querflöte hören, Man sieht den badenden, lesenden, schreibenden, liebenden und musizierenden Kurfürsten tief im Gespräch mit Voltaire unter den Alleen gehen. Dann steigt einem der leichte Knoblauchgeruch in die Nase, denn eine verlassene Mätresse hatte in dem gesamten Garten Knoblauchsamen gestreut, um sich an ihrem Liebhaber zu rächen. Auch dieses Paradies hat wie alles auf der Welt, eine kleine Schattenseite.
Translation - English In May 1778, when the philosopher Voltaire (born 1964 in Paris) was on his deathbed, helpful friends at his bedside were said to have asked him whether he wanted anything. They thought he might like a glass of water or wine or a cushion under his back. But Voltaire answered: “To stroll through the Gardens of Schwetzingen once again.” Everyone alive today can fulfil Voltaire’s wish. For the Gardens of Schwetzingen, situated between Heidelberg and Mannheim in the south of Germany, are more beautiful than ever before.
Voltaire visited the summer residence of Schwetzingen in 1753 and in 1758. In fact his major work Candide is set there. Voltaire’s host was the powerful Prince-Elector Karl Theodor von der Pfalz. After Heidelberg with its famous castle and Renaissance garden had been destroyed by Louis XIV’s troops in 1693, the Palatinate Prince-Elector relocated his seat of residence to Mannheim, where he planned a new town with a large Baroque residence that would be one of the largest castles in Europe. But he was unable to build a garden there like the one at Versailles, as the Rhine on one side and fortifications on the other offered limited space. So Karl Theodor decided to design a large garden in Schwetzingen, situated between Heidelberg and Mannheim in the damp fields of the Rhine valley, to act as a summer residence. The garden, not the castle, was to be the main attraction. Inspiring ideas from the Gardens of Versailles are reflected in miniature in the design. Symmetrically arranged canals and paths divide the grounds into flower-bedecked parterre and hedged areas. The garden would also look to the future. In the last years of its development, an English landscape garden was also added. The Prince-Elector Karl Theodor chose the Lorraine architect Nicolas de Pigage (1723-1796) to draw up these plans. He came from Lunéville, where the renowned Polish king Stanislaus I. Leszczyński, father-in-law to Louis XV, had built a world-famous garden in the Parisian style. When it was removed after the king’s death, the Prince-Elector along with his architect Pigage purchased a whole range of sculptures which were installed in Schwetzingen and are still in place today.
The Gardens of Schwetzingen contain countless pavilions, 130 sculptures, artificial Roman ruins and aqueducts, bridges, a theatre, an orangery and even a large mosque. But the most beautiful of all is the bathhouse, which Pigage built for the personal use of the Prince-Elector.
Karl Theodor, a contemporary of Frederick the Great, conducted few wars and during his lifetime inherited one realm after another, culminating in the important duchy of Bavaria. Frederick the Great called him a “lazy lucky pig”, because he inherited more land than the Prussian king could conquer through war. However, the Palatinate Prince-Elector was not lazy at all. He governed his land with discipline, collected art, built a large library, established a theatre and an opera house, and maintained one of the largest orchestras in Europe. Karl Theodor loved his people and in particular his many mistresses.
In Schwetzingen he was particularly fond of the so-called bathhouse and the surrounding garden. Protected by hedges in the middle of the garden lay this wonderful pavilion, where the enlightened prince could retreat to in complete privacy. Karl Theodor certainly had a penchant for enlightened orientalism, as not far from the bathhouse was a large mosque, which at first glance reminds you of Mozart’s opera ‘The Abduction from the Seraglio’. Mozart did visit the Prince-Elector after all. He stayed several months in the town where Karl Theodor resided and gained much inspiration from the musical life there.
Let us step through an opening in the hedges and approach the bathhouse from the east. An oval vestibule decorated with pillars and obelisks welcomes the visitor. A door leads into an oval salon with marble floors and a large oval ceiling painting showing Aurora, the goddess of dawn, banishing the night, an allegorical glorification of the Prince-Elector bringing light after a period of darkness. Every now and then concerts were held in this oval room. The prince accompanied the orchestra on the flute. But he also often played alone in this magnificent room with its incredible acoustics. On the left, you enter a small anteroom, which leads in turn to the bath on one side and to a small bedroom on the other. The bath is probably the finest of its kind from the 18th century. It is like a small thermal bath; steps allow comfortable access to the water. There are elaborate stucco wall decorations, the varying shapes of which allegorically allude to the element of water, mirror panels and ceiling and wall panels made of semi-precious stones, which are reminiscent of a grotto, all creating an unforgettable ensemble. Pigage was a proponent of “architecture parlante”, speaking architecture. Every wall decoration was to allude to the curative effect of water. If the Prince-Elector found the water too cool, he could twist a small snake’s head to fill the bath up with hot water from a nearby boiler house. After bathing, the Prince-Elector could either go through a door into the open air or enter the bedroom through another, where a turned down bed awaited him.
On the other side of the oval vestibule are two additional rooms: a small scriptorium decorated with splendid landscape paintings by the court painter Ferdinand Kobell, and a small tea room hung with Chinese wallpaper. In his refuge the Prince-Elector could bathe, sleep, write, eat or make music. Once these basic physical needs were sated, the Prince-Elector could wander out of the oval room into the garden. It comprised a long aisle of trellises, at the end of which stood a wall painted with a trompe l'oeil landscape. It shows a river flowing into the distance, and conveys the impression of an unapproachable expanse. This aisle is appropriately called the “end of the world”. In the middle stands the so-called birdbath. A bronze eagle owl sits on the ground holding its prey. Above, on the circle of trellises, the day birds perch and spout water in huge arcs onto the night predator. To the side of the fountain are four small aviaries, where living birds still twitter today.
Not far from this enchanting setting lies a large orangery. In spring hundreds of orange and lemon trees transformed the heated rooms into an oriental scented garden. In summer the orange trees were placed in a separate area of the garden, which is also bordered by a small canal. Today the orangery houses a collection of original sculptures, copies of which stand in the garden. Every spring since 1952 festivals have taken place in the nearby rococo theatre, including historical concert and opera performances, which turn Schwetzingen, as in the time of Karl Theodor, into a musical centre.
As you walk through the park at dusk, with a bit of imagination you can still hear his flute. You can see the bathing, reading, writing, loving and music-making Prince-Elector deep in conversation with Voltaire on the tree-lined avenues. Then a scent of garlic reaches your nostrils, because a forsaken mistress scattered garlic seeds throughout the garden to take revenge on her lover. Like everywhere in the world, even this paradise has its own small drawback.

8. Synthetische Synopse − Zusammenfassung und Ausblick
Wohl kaum ein Konflikt hat in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten unsere europäische Gesellschaft so geprägt wie das Ringen von Frauen und Männern um Chancengleichheit in allen gesellschaftlich relevanten Bereichen. Der Zielkonflikt zwischen beruflichem Erfolg und harmonischer Familiengestaltung ist gleichsam der „Hotspot“ dieses Ringens, denn die überwiegende Zahl der Menschen in unserer Gesellschaft ist davon direkt oder indirekt betroffen. Dabei ist unser Ehemodell eigentlich nicht der Standard der Welt, weil die Gesellschaften anderer Kulturen weit weniger auf Paare fokussiert sind. In unserer paar-zentrierten Gesellschaft machen Arbeit und Beziehung Glück und Zufriedenheit der Menschen aus, wenn sie in einem ausgewogenen Verhältnis zueinander stehen. Die gesellschaftliche Realität offenbart jedoch keine Harmonie, sondern ein komplexes mehrdimensionales Konfliktnetz, das in unterschiedlichen Lebensphasen verschiedene Ausprägungen durchläuft und Gestaltungszwänge im dyadischen Konstruktsystem von Mann und Frau auslöst. Im Mittelpunkt dieser Diskussion steht der Begriff der „Vereinbarungskarriere“, als jene Karrierephase, in der Erwerbsarbeit und Elternschaft – insbesondere die Verantwortung für noch nicht selbstständige Kinder – aufeinandertreffen und gestaltet werden müssen. Die betrachtete Kernzielgruppe umfasst die jüngeren männlichen und weiblichen Führungskräfte mit 5-10 Jahren Berufserfahrung und heranwachsenden Kindern im Vor- und Grundschulalter. In dieser Lebens- und Laufbahnphase entbrennt der Konflikt zwischen Berufs- und Familienorientierung am heftigsten, da sowohl der berufliche Aufstieg, als auch die Fürsorge für die heranwachsenden Kinder höchsten Einsatz erfordern. Die Situation verschärft sich, wenn ein Umbruch der Wertvorstellungen und Lebensverhältnisse eintritt, weil eine große Zahl berufstätiger Menschen in Deutschland nicht wirklich identisch mit ihren beruflichen Zielen ist, sondern eine kognitive Dissonanz zwischen Zielsetzung und Identifikation aufgebaut hat, wobei die Frustration mit zunehmendem Lebensstandard steigt und die Menschen sich immer mehr Selbstverwirklichung wenn möglich außerhalb von Beruf und Familie wünschen. Die Frustrationsdichte, der die Menschen ausgesetzt sind, bzw. sich selbst aussetzen, steigt. Trotz abnehmender Arbeitsmotivation ist Karriere für viele jüngeren Führungskräfte aber ein Lebensziel, das Anerkennung, Einkommen und Macht verschafft. Die Führungskräfte müssen Spitzenleistungen in zwei Welten erbringen, deren Regeln konträr auseinanderliegen. Was in der Berufswelt als Muss-Kriterium gilt, belastbar, widerstandsfähig und unsentimental zu sein, wird in der Familienwelt, in der Zärtlichkeit, Wärme und Einfühlsamkeit gewünscht sind, missverstanden. Mobilitätserfordernisse im Beruf führen außerdem zu einer „Enträumlichung“ sozialer Beziehungen.
Das Spannungsfeld der Doppelbelastung durch Beruf und Familie wächst von Tag zu Tag und, wie dargelegt wurde, auch von Nacht zu Nacht. Entscheiden sich Männer oder Frauen für eine der beiden Seiten, fallen sie aus den Erfolgsmustern der jeweils anderen Seite heraus. Es wird eng zwischen „Burn-Out“ und unverbindlicher „Sozialpartnerschaft“. Im Beruf beginnen sich bestehende Hierarchien aufzulösen, weil die jüngeren Führungskräfte nicht gleichzeitig ihren Vorgesetzten Gehorsam verweigern und von ihren Untergebenen Subordination fordern können. Der Umbruch der Lebensverhältnisse unserer Gesellschaft ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass Selbstentfaltungswerte wie Emanzipation, Genuss, Selbstverwirklichung und Unabhängigkeit die früher vorherrschenden Pflicht- und Akzeptanzwerte wie Gehorsam, Hinnahmebereitschaft, Disziplin und Selbstlosigkeit verdrängt haben. Die Familie als soziale Gruppe ist zerbrechlicher geworden, weil auch die Machtansprüche der Familienmitglieder steigen. Auf der anderen Seite muss das Werte- und Steuerungssystem, das den Charakter der Führungskräfte bestimmt, neu justiert werden.
Als Ergänzung der formalen Konzepte, die Staat und Unternehmen zur Bewältigung der Konfliktsituationen zwischen Beruf und Familie heute anbieten, wird in dieser Arbeit ein Lösungsansatz vorgelegt, der auf dem Salutogenese-Konzept von A. Antonovsky aufbaut. Wir gehen der Frage nach, wie es dem einzelnen Menschen (und nicht der Gesellschaft) gelingen kann, die vorhandene Konfliktsituation angemessen und effektiv in den Griff zu bekommen. Das Konzept basiert auf der Feststellung, dass Krankheit und Gesundheit heute keine einander ausschließenden Zustände, sondern Extrempole auf einem Kontinuum, vorstellbar als eine ständige Bewegung auf einer Linie zwischen Gesundheit und Krankheit sind, das als Gesundheits-Krankheits-Kontinuum bezeichnet wird. Im Wechselspiel von protektiven und Risikofaktoren ist der Mensch im Stande, kritische Lebensereignisse bzw. Konflikte zu handhaben, seine Ressourcen zu regulieren, Bewältigungspotentiale für sich zu erschließen und ein Gefühl von Kohärenz, Sinnhaftigkeit, Integrität und Wohlbefinden zu entwickeln. Antonovsky hat durch empirische Untersuchungen belegt, dass gesunde Menschen über eine geistig-seelische Globalorientierung verfügen, die er als Kohärenzgefühl (SOC) bezeichnet hat. Es drückt aus, in welchem Ausmaß man ein durchdringendes, ausdauerndes und dennoch dynamisches Gefühl des Vertrauens hat, dass Konflikte, in die man hingestellt ist, strukturiert, vorhersehbar und erklärbar sind, einem die Ressourcen zu Verfügung stehen, um den Anforderungen, die die Konflikte stellen, zu begegnen und dass diese Anforderungen Herausforderungen sind, die Anstrengung und Engagement lohnen. Nach Antonovsky verfügt der Mensch über generalisierte Widerstandressourcen, mit denen er den Stressoren begegnen kann. Wenn man das Kohärenzgefühl als stabile Eigenschaft, die nicht durch individuelle, sondern nur durch soziale und kulturelle Bedingungen geprägt ist, definiert, kann man das Salutogenese-Konzept auf unsere Zielgruppe übertragen und zuerst zu einem theoretischen und dann zu mehreren praktischen Lösungsansätzen gelangen. Der theoretische Lösungsansatz führt uns dazu, dass ein positives Selbstbildnis, soziale Unterstützung, die Erfahrung und Konsistenz (im Sinne von Verständnis für Zusammenhänge) und die Handhabbarkeit der Lebensanforderungen (im Sinne einer Balance zwischen Über- und Unterforderung) verhindern, dass Spannungen in Stress umgewandelt werden. Dies kann durch die Regulierung von Emotionen, die das Selbstwertgefühl bestimmen, gelingen. Im Kontext der sozialen Anerkennung, also der Teilhabe an Entscheidungsprozessen im gesellschaftlichen Umfeld, bilden sich Sinnfindung und das Empfinden von Bedeutsamkeit heraus. Selbstachtung, Identität und Selbstwahrung sind weitere wichtige Widerstandressourcen.
Die praktischen Lösungsansätze verfolgen weitere Spuren. Es wird ein Ko-evolutionsprozess dargestellt, der den Weg durch mehrere Bewältigungsszenarien aufzeigt. Er beschreibt komplexe, unterschiedliche, aber interdependente Entwicklungssysteme, die trotz Störungen, Hemmungen und Fehlverhalten der agierenden Personen idealerweise zu einer dauernden Balance der Handhabung unterschiedlicher Beziehungssysteme führen können. Der den Ausführungen zugrunde liegende Standpunkt ist ein familienzentrierter. Wir halten die Entwicklung einer so konfliktfrei wie möglich agierenden Familie für einen Grundpfeiler für den weiteren Erfolg der Volkswirtschaften unseres Markosystems. Ziel sind familiengerechte Arbeitsverhältnisse – nicht arbeitsgerechte Familien. Ko-evolution bezeichnet in unseren Ausführungen die gegenseitige Beeinflussung der persönlichen Entwicklung von Partnern, die zusammenleben. Es geht darum, wie sich Menschen im Zusammenleben entwickeln und Wege gehen, die losgelöst vom Partner nicht verstanden werden können. Je harmonischer die Beziehung, desto mehr weichen die Interessen der Individuen zurück und werden von Interessen überlagert, die sich aus der Partnerschaft entwickeln, ohne dass der eine im anderen aufgeht. In dieser dyadisch konstruierten Welt bilden sich zum einen die gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse ab, zum anderen grenzt sie sich als private gegen die äußere Welt ab. Da ein Mensch nicht nur in der dyadischen, sondern auch in anderen Welten, so der Berufswelt, lebt, muss er als Mitglied verschiedener Konstruktsysteme deren Gegensätze und Widersprüche in sich integrieren. Mit dem Salutogenese-Konzept haben wir einen Schlüssel in der Hand, die Konflikte zwischen den beiden Mikrosystemen Familie und Arbeitswelt wesentlich zu verringern. Wir stellen Copingressourcen und Copingprozesse zur Diskussion, die Wege aufzeigen, dass der Konflikt zwischen Berufs- und Familienorientierung verstehbar, handhabbar und sinnvoll wird.
In ethischer Hinsicht ist die moderne Familie als intergenerationale personale Lebens- und Wohngemeinschaft zu definieren – Elternschaft, Lebensgemeinschaft und Personalität sind damit gemeint. Die Familie im christlichen Sinne ist als Träger von sozialen, personalen und religiösen Sinngehalten zu verstehen – Liebe, Kultur und Bildung stehen im Mittelpunkt, hier lernen Kinder von Liebe umhegt, leichter die wahre Ordnung der Wirklichkeit. Deshalb bilden Ehe und Familie im christlichen Wertesystem eine untrennbare Einheit. Die Familienethik gründet sich auf den christlichen Person-Begriff, der den Menschen als „Sein“ und „Mit-Sein“ mit anderen versteht – als individuelles und zugleich soziales Wesen.
Die Familie steht in einem ehtisch-soziologischen Wandlungsprozess, der von einer weiter zunehmenden Individualisierung geprägt wird. Im Extremfall schält sich unter austauschbar werdenden Familienbeziehungen innerhalb und außerhalb der Familie nur noch die Eigenständigkeit der weiblichen und männlichen Einzelbiographie heraus. Die früheren starken religiösen Bindungskräfte der Familienverbände verlieren wegen einer zunehmenden Säkularisierung der Gesellschaft an Wirkungskraft und Einfluss. Der Einzelne erfährt sich heute nicht mehr in dem Maße als Teil eines großen übergeordneten Ganzen, sondern zunehmend als Individuum. Er lebt in keiner einheitlichen Lebenswelt mehr, sondern bewegt sich zwischen verschiedenen Lebenswelten, etwa zwischen seinem hochspezialisierten Arbeitsplatz, dem Leben im öffentlichen Raum und der Familie. Als Folge der Egozentrierung von Mann und Frau erhöht sich das Konfliktpotential in Ehe, Partnerschaft und Familie. Wie kann man diese Spirale durchbrechen? Die Ehepartner müssen nach individuellen Lösungen suchen, müssen miteinander aushandeln – und zwar immer wieder neu – wie sie die Zwänge oder Ambitionen der Versorgungssicherheit, der Karriere und des Berufs mit ihren partnerschaftlichen und familiären Wünschen und Vorstellungen vereinbaren können.
Ein erster Schritt ist die Erkenntnis, dass die beste Form der Selbstverwirklichung in der menschlichen Begegnung, insbesondere in der Liebesbeziehung ihren Ausdruck findet. Alle Formen der Selbstverwirklichung: durch Selbsterkenntnis, in der Begegnung mit anderen und in der Verwirklichung durch eigene Werke und Leistungen sind Grundlagen der diskutierten Bewältigungskonzepte. Ein zweiter Schritt ist die Auflösung früherer Rollenzuordnungen und deren Neuverteilung, die lebensphasenbedingt sein kann, aber generell zu einer größeren Rollenvielfalt für beide Geschlechter führen wird.
In der Zeit des Umbruchs, in der wir uns befinden, ist jeder für die Ausgestaltung des Bildes seiner Persönlichkeit, die Wahl seines Handlungsrepertoires und damit seines Bildes von Männlichkeit und Weiblichkeit selbst verantwortlich. Sobald ein Kind geboren wird, müssen beide Partner in sich nochmals verändernde Rollen hineinwachsen – in eine „Familienkarriere“, in der das Paarsystem an die Beziehung der Kinder, die Differenzierung zwischen Partner- und Elternrolle und an eine funktionsfähige Elternallianz angepasst wird. Die Unterschiede im Bewältigungsverhalten hängen von den verschiedenen Bindungsstilen der Partner und von ihrer Geschlechterrollenorientierung ab. Partnerlandkarten können das Kennen, Erkennen und Verstehen der Partner vertiefen.
Emotionale Bindungen, Gefühl und Liebe sind die zentralen Ressourcen zur Konfliktbewältigung. Emotionen sind die subjektivsten Elemente des menschlichen Bewusstseins. Aber sie und auch genetisch programmierte Emotionen können durch Selbstreflexion gesteuert werden. Die unterschiedlichen Formen die Liebe – von der leidenschaftlichen bis zur romantischen Liebe – erzeugen die für die Paarbeziehung wichtige Bindungswirkung, vor allem auch im Konfliktfall. Die zentrale Funktion positiver Gefühle besteht darin, das Denk-Handlungs-Repertoire der Partner zu erweitern und damit dauerhafte, persönliche (psychische, intellektuelle und soziale) Ressourcen aufzubauen. Als stärkende Kraft muss die Liebe auch unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Spiritualität und einer philosophischen Betrachtung gesehen werden.
Eine nicht weniger wichtige Bewältigungsressource – die Familie und Beruf betrifft – sind emotionale Intelligenz und Kompetenz. Was man braucht, um ein gelungenes Leben zu führen ist emotionale Intelligenz, um die eigenen Emotionen zu erkennen und zu kennen, und damit Emotionen handhaben und in die Tat umsetzen zu können. Emotionale Selbstbeherrschung – Gratifikationen hinauszuschieben und Impulsivität zu unterdrücken – sind Grundlage jeder Art von Erfolg. Zur emotionalen Intelligenz gehören auch Empathie, zu wissen was andere fühlen, und die Kunst mit den Emotionen anderer umzugehen, das heißt soziale Kompetenz und emotionale Integrität. Emotional intelligente Eltern vermitteln ihren Kindern Selbstvertrauen, Neugier, Intentionalität, Selbstbeherrschung, Verbundenheit, Kommunikationsfähigkeit und Kooperationsbereitschaft.
Es ist das Verdienst von A. Antonovsky, dass er mit seinem Salutogenese-Konzept den Weg zwischen Temperament und Sozialisation gewiesen und die Dichotomie zwischen Denken und Handeln überwunden hat. Die Verbindung von Verstehen und handhaben erhöht das Kohärenzgefühl, steigert die Konfliktfähigkeit und die Konfliktlösungsmöglichkeit – und ist Voraussetzung für das Gestalten einer gemeinsamen Welt der Partner.
Der Einsatz der geschaffenen Ressourcen kann zu einer Änderung des Beziehungsverhaltens, zu einer Annäherung von Werten und Einstellungen führen, die wichtiger sind, als die Ähnlichkeiten von Persönlichkeitsmerkmalen. Auf der Grundlage der personalen Ressourcen sind die Partner in der Lage, sich als Ehepartner und als Familie mit Kindern in der von ihnen geschaffenen inneren Welt einzurichten – die Partner konstruieren miteinander ihre eigene Welt. Das Kohärenzgefühl stellt dabei eine übergeordnete Ressource dar, die die kognitiven, emotionalen und motivationalen Prozesse in der Paarbeziehung mitbestimmt. Das Kohärenzgefühl spielt eine Katalysatorrolle in der Festigung der sozialen Widerstandsressourcen – es ist gleichsam der „Treiber“ für die Entwicklungsbereitschaft von Paaren, gemeinsam in einen Prozess verhaltensgesteuerter Konvergenz einzutreten. Die Partner machen sich auf den Weg, unterschiedliches Beziehungsverhalten wahrzunehmen und zu akzeptieren. Der Eigennutz muss aus eigennützigem Interesse auch dem Fremdnutzen, den Ansprüchen des Partners genügen. Es ist die der Beziehung innewohnende Gerechtigkeitsbalance und Gleichwertigkeitsbalance zu beachten – eine gleichwertige Beziehungsteilhabe. Der Prozess der gegenseitigen Beeinflussung ist ein Unterstützen, Begrenzen und Herausfordern.
Wenn die Partner einzeln oder gemeinsam ihre Fähigkeiten voll einsetzen, um eine Herausforderung zu bestehen, die sie gerade noch bewältigen können, kann sich eine „Flow-Erfahrung“ einstellen, ein Schwebezustand, den nicht nur Sportler als Hochform des Umganges mit den eigenen Zielen beschreiben. Zu optimalem Erleben gehört ein feines Gleichgewicht zwischen der eigenen Handlungsfähigkeit und den vorhandenen Möglichkeiten zu handeln – nur so gewinnt man Kontrolle über die Qualität von Erfahrungen. Damit gemeinsame Ziele in Interaktion münden, die die Komplexität der Familie verstärken, muss die Familie zugleich differenziert als auch integriert sein. In einer integrierten Familie sind die differenzierten Ziele aller jeweiligen anderen wichtig. Rituale schaffen den dafür nötigen Aktionsraum und Demut des Einzelnen sich unterordnen zu können, bestimmt den Erfolg der Familie als Gruppe.
Durch den Einsatz der Ressourcen sollte sich das Beziehungsverhalten von Paaren auch dadurch positiv verändern, dass Kontrollmechanismen erkannt und beachtet werden. Da Stressoren allgegenwärtig sind, sind wir permanent zu Coping aufgefordert. In diesem Bewältigungsprozess entwickeln sich die Paarbeziehungen in ständigem Feedback und Korrektur. Die Passung zwischen Persönlichkeit und Partnerschaft ist das Ergebnis ständiger Wechselwirkungen oder Transaktionen, die über längere Zeiträume wie Kontrollmechanismen wirken. Dass diese Transaktionen gezielt verlaufen können, ist eine Kontrolle des Commitments aller Beteiligten notwendig. Es muss die Bereitschaft vorhanden sein, die Beziehungen langfristig zu planen und darüber verbindliche Vereinbarungen zu treffen. Diese sollten das Verhältnis von Getrenntsein und Verbundensein, den Umgang mit Kongruenzen und Inkongruenzen, die gemeinsamen und individuellen Außenkontakte der Familienmitglieder in Beruf und Familie und die Rollenverteilung zwischen beruflichen und familialen Rollen regeln. Und diese Regeln müssen kohärent sein, das heißt, sie müssen von den Partnern als geordneter, konsistenter, strukturierter und klarer Kommunikationsprozess wahrgenommen werden. Dazu gehört auch eine positive Streitkultur, die den Bedürfnissen der Partner, ihrem Wunsch nach freier Bewegung, ihrer Mitgliedschaft in anderen Gruppen, Rechnung trägt, aber auch gemeinsame Gewohnheiten zu Symbolen, Sitten und Ritualen verdichtet und vielleicht sogar in der Lage ist, Mythen zu schaffen.
Die Verbindung zur beruflichen Seite des dargestellten Ko-evolutionsprozesses versucht die heutige Unternehmensethik herzustellen, denn jede arbeitsteilige Volkswirtschaft ist immer schon als ein Solidarzusammenhang zu begreifen. Die Erweiterung der Lebensfülle und nicht nur der Güterfülle im Sinne von autonom wählbaren Entfaltungsmöglichkeiten, rückt in den Blick. Gewünschte Wirtschaftsbürgerrechte erfordern als Grundlage eine Wirtschaftsethik, nach der sich der Einzelne bereit erklärt, nur solche Ziele zu verfolgen, die mit den Legitimitätsbestimmungen einer geordneten Gesellschaft freier und gleicher Bürger vereinbar ist. Vom Unternehmen ist eine autonome Selbstbindung an die Grundsätze der Geschäftsintegrität im Umgang mit allen Anspruchsgruppen (Stakeholdern) und der ethischen Verantwortung für das Gemeinwohl (Corporate Citizenship) zu fordern. Gegenstand der Unternehmensethik ist die Moral des Unternehmens, die sich in der Unternehmenskultur manifestiert. Die sinnstiftenden Wert- und Denkhaltungen führen zur Ausbildung einer unternehmensspezifischen Identität (Corporate Identity), die in Anerkennungs- und Teilhabesystemen ihre Ausprägung findet. Noch längst nicht alle Unternehmensführer haben erkannt, dass Anerkennung und Gerechtigkeit im Unternehmen in Zukunft die bestimmenden Erfolgsfaktoren und nicht nur die Beherrschung der Marktmechanismen sind.
Eine Brücke zwischen Unternehmensethik und Familienethik ist auch damit noch nicht gebaut. Beide stehen nach wie vor wie eherne Blöcke nebeneinander. In den verwirklichten Konzepten der Unternehmensethik gibt es nach wie vor ein „Oben und Unten“ im Unternehmen, eine wie immer geartete hierarchische Struktur des Anweisens und Durchführens, während in der Familie von gut ausgebildeten und intellektuell gebildeten Menschen (unsere Zielgruppe) ein partnerschaftliches miteinander Gestalten vorherrscht.
Der Mensch kann sich nicht mehr in der einen oder anderen Welt einrichten, weil die Gesellschaft und damit auch die Arbeitswelt mit neuen ordnungspolitischen Programmen in die Familie eingreift. Es verschärft sich zumindest der ethische Konflikt zwischen Beruf und Familie, wenn es nicht gelingt, neue ethische Regeln für die Berufswelt zu entwickeln, die sich mit der Familienethik decken. Das Konzept der „Dienenden Führung“ könnte ein solches Regelwerk sein.
Der ethische Kerngedanke, der Schutz des persönlichen Lebensraumes des Arbeitnehmers vor der Kontrolle und Abhängigkeit vom Unternehmen und vom Staat, nimmt immer mehr ab, weil beide mit Familienförderprogrammen tief in den Kern des bisherigen familialen Selbstverständnisses eindringen. Die Familie wird zusehens durch die Gesellschaft durchdrungen. Auf der anderen Seite laufen in den Unternehmen Demokratisierungsprozesse ab. Sie haben mit der Delegation von Verantwortung von oben nach unten vor Jahrzehnten begonnen und scheinen sich nun zunehmend umzukehren, indem eine Individualisierungswelle von unten nach oben die Unternehmensstrukturen und –abläufe verändert. Es kommt zur Abkehr von Normalarbeitsverhältnissen und zur Gestaltung neuer Lebensentwürfe, zu lebensphasenorientierten Vereinbarungskarrieren, die zu Patchwork-Biographien führen. Wer aber den wachsenden Einfluss der Gesellschaft auf seine Familie nicht will, wird nur diejenigen Familien-Sozialleistungen des Staates und Familienprogramme des Unternehmens akzeptieren, die ihm ein Höchstmaß an Familienautonomie belassen. Er wird sich auf die Suche nach eigenen Bewältigungsstrategien im Beruf machen.
Das Kohärenzgefühl erweist sich bei dieser Suche nicht nur als Persönlichkeitskonstrukt, sondern auch als eine Ressource. Kohärenzerleben ist eine Ressource von Gesundheit und gleichzeitig ein Bestandteil von Gesundheit. Die Lösungsansätze für die Vereinbarkeit von Beruf und Familie folgen zwei Leitbildern, dem der sequentiellen Vereinbarkeit und dem der simultanen Vereinbarkeit. Wenn wir, wie dargestellt, dem Leitbild der simultanen Vereinbarkeit folgen, haben wir nach personengebundenen Anforderungen, Triebmotiven und Kompetenzen zu suchen, die Selbstverwirklichungsprozesse in Gang setzen, die gleichermaßen in Beruf und Familie zu höherer Identifizierung führen. Triebmotive sind das beschriebene Flow-Erlebnis, die persönliche Anerkennung, die auf dem Aggressionstrieb beruht und die Bindung an die Arbeitsgruppe, die für Lust an Leistung sorgen. Die Fachkompetenz der Führungskräfte ist ihre qualifizierte soziale Kompetenz, die nicht Herrschaft über andere, sondern über sich selbst bedeutet. Sie steht im Einklang mit den christlichen Tugenden von Weisheit, Klugheit und Mäßigung.
Die Führungskräfteentwicklung als Persönlichkeitsentwicklung führt uns zum wichtigsten Lösungsansatz der Konflikte in der Berufswelt, der „Dienenden Führung“. Sie ist kein Konzept, keine Technik, sondern eine Lebenshaltung. Es geht um die Frage: Was kann ich für andere tun, damit sie sich persönlich weiterentwickeln und die gemeinschaftlichen Ziele erfolgreich realisieren können? Dienende Führung, wie sie von Robert Greensleaf 1970 entwickelt wurde, folgt einer ganzheitlichen Betrachtung der Qualitäten von Mensch, Arbeit und Gemeinschaftssinn und setzt ein spirituelles Verständnis von Identität, Mission, Vision und Umwelt voraus. Mit dieser Haltung befinden wir uns genau in dem individuellen Handlungskorridor, um einerseits Konflikte als Führungskraft im Beruf, andererseits als Ehepartner in der Familie handhaben und die Konflikte zwischen beiden Lebensbereichen bewältigen zu können. Dienende Führung im Beruf ist ein Schlüssel, die Spannung zwischen Karriere und Familie zu verringern. Die Kernelemente der Dienenden Führung wurden im Einzelnen beschrieben. Aus ihnen kann sich eine Führungskraft neuen Typs entwickeln, die ihre Urangst ablegt und ein neues Urvertrauen gewinnt, das ihr Kohärenzgefühl im Beruf verstärkt.
Das soziale Verhalten der Individuen unserer westlich verfassten Gesellschaften bewegt sich zwischen zwei Polen, der Individualisierung und der Kollektivierung. Wie wird es sich in Zukunft entwickeln? Wir fügen unsere Lösungsvorschläge der vergangenen Kapitel zu einem komplexen Ganzen zusammen. Die theoretisch und empirisch abgesicherte Klammer, die alle dargestellten Bewältigungsstrategien verbindet, ist das Salutogenese-Konzept. Um Sinn- und Identitätsfindung in Beruf und Familie als ganzheitlichen Ko-evolutionsprozess zu begreifen, müssen wir das kurzfristige Denken einer ungeduldigen Gesellschaft und den damit verbundenen Konflikt zwischen Charakter und Erfahrung überwinden. Denn die Erfahrung einer zusammenhangslosen Zeit bedroht die Fähigkeit des Menschen, seinen Charakter zu einer durchhaltbaren Lebensgeschichte zu formen.
Es wird den kommenden Generationen gelingen, ein Gruppen-Kohärenzgefühl zu entwickeln, wenn es der Gruppe, der man angehört, gelingt, zu einer gemeinsamen Sicht der Welt zu gelangen – und zwar in der Familie und in der Berufswelt. Das dafür benötigte Gruppenbewusstsein erwächst aus dem kollektiven Verhalten der Gruppenmitglieder, das in den Mythen, den Ritualen, dem Humor, der Sprache und in den Zeremonien ihren Ausdruck findet.
Die Bewältigungsstrategien, die wir für beide Gruppen – Familie und Arbeitsteam – dargestellt haben, überschneiden sich, sind aber nicht deckungsgleich. Der beste Lösungsansatz für die Ko-evolution von Beruf und Familie wäre, wenn es gelänge, beide Bewältigungsstrategien zur Deckung zu bringen. Mehrere Wege zu diesem Ziel erscheinen als gangbar, wenn wir partnerschaftliche Führung auf die Berufswelt und Dienende Führung auf die Familie beziehen, das heißt beide Bewältigungsszenarien miteinander verschränken:
Der erste beschreibt die partnerschaftliche Führung im Beruf. Sie erfordert zwei oder mehrere Menschen, die sich die Macht teilen und ihre Kräfte bündeln, um die gemeinsamen Ziele zu erreichen. Diese Art von Führung begründet sich darauf, dass die Individuen sich als Partner verhalten, eine gemeinsame Vision entwickeln, Ziele setzen und die Verantwortung gemeinsam übernehmen. Führung in Partnerschaft ist unteilbar, muss alle Entscheidungssituationen im Unternehmen umfassen und darf sich nicht nur auf Projektarbeit beschränken.
Der zweite beschreibt die Dienende Führung in der Familie. In dem Maße, in dem die Akteure in der Familie lernen, sich selbst zu dienen, entwickeln sie auch eine größere Dienstbarkeit anderen gegenüber. Sie werden lernen, die Kernelemente der Dienenden Führung: aktives Zuhören, Empathie, Bewusstsein, Überzeugungskraft, Vorstellungskraft, Weitsicht und den verantwortlichen Umgang mit anderen als Ressourcen zu erkennen, ein stärkeres Kohärenzgefühl in der Familie zu entwickeln. Sie sind auf gutem Wege zum „Dienenden Familienführer“, der den Konflikt innerhalb und außerhalb der Familie als verstehbar, handhabbar und einer sinnvollen Lösung zugänglich erkennt.
Die dargestellten Bewältigungsstrategien: Partnerschaftliche Führung im Beruf und Dienende Führung in der Familie finden ihre Deckung in dem, was wir als Dienstbarkeit beschrieben haben. Ko-evolution von Beruf und Familie kann dann gelingen, wenn die Menschen in beiden Lebenssphären selbstverantwortlich integer führen. Das setzt ein Verhalten voraus, das auf Wahrhaftigkeit, statt auf Manipulation aufbaut, Konflikte fair klären, statt sie zu unterdrücken oder gewaltsam ausfechten lässt, Beziehungen versöhnt, statt um die Macht zu kämpfen und den Nutzen für den anderen vor den Eigennutz zu stellen. Ein hehres Ziel? Die Zielerreichung beginnt mit dem ersten Schritt!
Ob die Selbstverantwortung des Einzelnen für die Konfliktlösung auf Dauer freigehalten werden kann von neuen gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen, Beeinflussungen oder gar Zwängen, die dann ein neues Menschenbild postulieren, bleibt abzuwarten.

8. Synthetic synopsis – Summary and outlook
Rarely has a conflict so divided our European society in recent decades as the struggle by men and women for equal opportunities in all applicable areas of society. The conflict of goals between professional success and a harmonious family arrangement is the “hot spot”, so to speak, of this struggle, since it directly or indirectly concerns an overwhelming number of people in our society. Our marriage model is not the norm throughout the world; other societies in other cultures are far less focused on couples. In our couple-centred society, work and relationships constitute happiness and contentment for people, when they remain together in a balanced relationship. However, social reality shows no sign of harmony, rather a complex multi-dimensional net of conflicts that goes through various forms in the different phases of life and causes tensions in the dyadic construct system of man and woman. At the centre of this discussion lies the concept of the “agreement career”, that phase in one’s career, in which gainful employment and parenthood – in particular the responsibility for children who are not yet independent – overlap and must be organised. The core target group studied comprises younger male and female managers with 5-10 years work experience and growing children at pre-school and primary school ages. In this phase of one’s life and career the conflict between focusing on work and on family is at its most fierce, because both career progression and childcare demand the greatest commitment. The situation is exacerbated if a change in values and living conditions occurs, because a large number of working people in Germany are not really allied to their career goals, rather they have cultivated a cognitive dissonance between aims and identification, whereby frustration with rising standards of living increases and they wish for more self-fulfilment preferably away from work and the family. The level of frustration, that people are exposed to, or expose themselves to, increases. In spite of declining work motivation, a career is still a life goal for many younger managers, as it provides recognition, income and power. Managers must generate peak performances in two worlds, whose rules are contrary to each other. What is seen as a “must” in the world of work - being resilient, tough and unsentimental - is misconstrued in a family context, where tenderness, warmth and empathy are desired. In addition, mobility requirements in work lead to a “de-spatialisation” of social relations.
The tension surrounding the dual burden of work and family grows from day to day and, as was shown, also from night to night. If men or women choose one of the two sides, they drop out of the patterns of success of the other side. It’s a close call between “burn-out” and non-binding “social partnership”. At work, existing hierarchies begin to dissolve, because the younger managers refuse to obey their superiors and can demand subordination from their juniors. The change in living conditions in our society is characterised by the replacement of previously predominant duty and acceptance values, such as obedience, compliance, discipline and altruism, with self-development values such as emancipation, indulgence, self-fulfilment and independence. The family as a social group has become more fragile, because claims to power by family members are also increasing. On the other hand, the value and guidance system that determines the character of managers is newly adjusted.
As a supplement to the formal concepts that the state and companies offer to cope with the conflict situation between work and family today, this study presents an approach to a solution, which is based on the salutogenesis concept by A. Antonovsky. We pursue the question of how an individual (and not society) can appropriately and effectively get the hang of the existing conflict situation. The concept is based on the realisation that illness and health today have no precluding conditions, rather they are extreme poles on a continuum, conceivable as a continuous movement on a line between health and illness, which is dubbed a “health-ease versus dis-ease continuum”. In the interplay between protective and risk factors, a person is able to handle critical life events or conflicts, to control his/her resources, to open up coping potentials and to develop a sense of coherence, meaningfulness, integrity and well-being. Antonovsky proved through empirical investigations that healthy people have an intellectual-emotional global orientation, which he called the sense of coherence (SOC). It expresses the extent to which one has a pervasive, enduring and yet dynamic feeling of trust that conflicts in which one finds oneself are structured, predictable and explicable, that the resources are available to meet the requirements demanded by the conflicts and that these requirements are challenges that are worth the effort and commitment. According to Antonovsky, man has generalized resistance resources with which he can combat stressors. If the sense of coherence is defined as a stable characteristic that is not shaped by individual but only by social and cultural conditions, the salutogenesis concept can be transferred to our target group, and initially a theoretical then several practical approaches to solutions can be reached. The theoretical approach to a solution leads us to conclude that a positive self-image, social support, the experience and consistency (in terms of the understanding of coherences) and the manageability of life demands (in terms of a balance between over- and under-demand) prevent tensions turning into stress. This can be achieved through the control of emotions, which determine self-esteem. In the context of social recognition, i.e. the participation in decision-making processes in a social environment, the finding of meaning and the feeling of significance are established. Self-respect, identity and self-preservation are further important resistance resources.
The practical approaches to solutions follow more leads. A coevolution process is illustrated that demonstrates the route through several coping scenarios. It describes complex, different, but interdependent development systems that, in spite of disturbances, delays and malfunctions of the acting person can ideally lead to a lasting balance in the management of different relationship systems. The underlying viewpoint is family-centric. We think the development of as conflict-free a family as possible is a cornerstone for the further success of the national economy of our macrosystem. The goal is work relationships that are family-friendly – not work-friendly families. In our observations, coevolution designates the mutual influence of personal development for partners who live together. It relates to how people develop when they live together and how they take paths that cannot be comprehended without taking the partner into account. The more harmonious the relationship, the more the interests of the individual diminish and are replaced by interests that develop from the partnership, without one being completely absorbed in the other. In this dyadically constructed world, on the one hand social relationships reproduce themselves, on the other hand they isolate themselves privately from the outside world. Because a person lives not only in the dyadic but also in other worlds, i.e. the world of work, he/she must, as a member of different construct systems, integrate their contradictions and inconsistencies into him/herself. With the salutogenesis concept we have a key in our hands that can considerably lessen the conflicts between both microsystems – the world of the family and of work. We discuss coping resources and coping processes that show the ways that the conflict between a focus on work and on family becomes understandable, manageable and meaningful.
Ethically-speaking the modern family is to be defined as an intergenerational personal life and living community – parenthood, life partnership and personality are meant therein. The family in the Christian sense is to be understood as a bearer of social, personal and religious meanings – love, culture and education are central, here children learn of love in a caring environment, and learn more easily the true order of reality. Therefore marriages and families in the Christian value system form an indivisible unity. Family ethics bases itself on the Christian concept of a person, which understands man as “being” and “with-being” with others – as an individual and at the same time a social being.
The family stands in an ethical-sociological change process that is shaped by a further increasing individualisation. In an extreme case only the independence of the female and male individual life story is disconnected amongst increasingly interchangeable family relationships within and outside the family. The previously strong religious binding energy of family groups loses efficacy and influence thanks to an increasing secularisation of society. Today the individual no longer learns as part of a large superior whole, rather increasingly as an individual. He/she no longer lives in a coherent world, rather moves between different worlds, such as between the highly-specialised workplace, public life and family. As a consequence of the self-centring of husband and wife the conflict potential in the marriage, the partnership and the family increases. How can this spiral be broken? Spouses must search for individual solutions, must negotiate with each other – continuously – on how they can reconcile the compulsions or ambitions of the security of supply, of a career and of work with their desires and ideas for the partnership and the family.
A first step is the knowledge that the best form of self-fulfilment will find its expression in human encounters, in particular in love relationships. All forms of self-fulfilment, through self-awareness in encounters with others and in the fulfilment through one’s own works and achievements, are the basis of the coping concept discussed. A second step is the clearing of former role allocations and their reallocation, which can depend on the phase of life, but in general will lead to a greater role variety for both sexes.
In the time of crisis in which we find ourselves, everyone is responsible for assembling the image of their personality, the choice of their range of activities and with that the choice of their image of masculinity and femininity. As soon as a child is born, both partners must grow into their still changing roles – in a “family career”, in which the couple system is adapted to the relationship with the child, to the differentiation between partner and parent roles and to a functional parental alliance. The differences in coping behaviours depend on the different relationship styles of the partners and on their gender role orientation. Partner maps can deepen the knowledge, perception and understanding of the partner.
Emotional ties, feelings and love are the central resources for coping with conflict. Emotions are the subjective elements of the human consciousness. But they, as well as genetically programmed emotions, can be controlled through self-reflection. The various forms of love – from the passionate to the romantic – create an important binding force for the couple’s relationship, above all in case of conflict. The core function of positive feelings is to broaden the thought-action-repertoire of the partner and thus build lasting personal (physical, intellectual and social) resources. As a strengthening force, love must also be seen from the perspective of spirituality and philosophical reflection.
A coping resource of equal importance - which relates to family and work - is emotional intelligence and competence. Emotional intelligence is necessary to lead a successful life, in order to recognise and know one's own emotions and to be able to manage and utilize emotions. Emotional self-control – delaying gratification and suppressing impulsiveness – is the foundation of every kind of success. Other elements of emotional intelligence are empathy - knowing what others feel - and the art of dealing with the emotions of others, i.e. social competence and emotional integrity. Emotionally intelligent parents impart to their children self-confidence, curiosity, intentionality, self-control, attachment, the ability to communicate and willingness to cooperate.
A. Antonovsky, with his salutogenesis concept, has shown the way between character and socialisation and has overcome the dichotomy between thought and action. The connection between understanding and management increases the sense of coherence, enhances the ability to deal with conflict - and is a prerequisite for the creation of a mutual world for partners.
The usage of the resources created can lead to a change in relationship behaviour, to a convergence of values and attitudes, which is more important than similar personality traits. On the basis of personal resources, partners are in a position to establish themselves as a married couple and as a family with children in the inner world created by themselves – partners construct their own world together. The sense of coherence thereby represents a superior resource, which participates in the cognitive, emotional and motivational processes in the couple’s relationship. The sense of coherence plays a catalyst role in the consolidation of social resistance resources - it is likewise the "driver" for the couple’s willingness to develop, to enter together into a process of behaviour-led convergence. The partners set out on the path towards perceiving and accepting different kinds of relationship behaviour. For selfish reasons, self-interest must also satisfy third party interests, the demands of the partner. Attention should be paid to the balance of fairness and equality inherent in the relationship – an equal share in the relationship. The process of mutual influence is supporting, limiting and challenging.
If the partners, individually or together, fully utilize their abilities to meet a challenge that they can only just cope with, a “flow-experience” can emerge, a state of uncertainty, that sportsmen are not alone in describing as the top form of their interactions with their own goals. Relating to optimal experience is a fine balance between one’s own ability to act and to handle the existing possibilities – only thus can one win control over the quality of experiences. For common goals to lead to interaction, which strengthens the complexity of the family, the family must be differentiated and integrated at the same time. In an integrated family, the differentiated goals of each member are important. Rituals create the necessary space for action and humility of the individual for him/her to be able to subordinate, determining the success of the family as a group.
Through the application of resources, the relationship behaviour of couples should also positively change, so that control mechanisms are recognised and observed. Because stressors are omnipresent, we are permanently asked to cope. In this coping process, couple’s relationships develop in a state of continuous feedback and correction. The match between personality and partnership is the result of continuous interplay or transactions, which function over long periods of time as control mechanisms. For these transactions to proceed purposefully, control of the commitment of all participants is necessary. The willingness must exist, to plan relations long-term and to strike binding agreements on this. These should control the relation between separation and togetherness, the handling of congruencies and incongruencies, the mutual and individual external contact of the family member at work and in the family and the role division between work and family roles. And these rules must be coherent, i.e. they must be perceived by the partners as an organised, consistent, structured and clear communications process. That also includes a positive atmosphere of debate, which takes into account the needs of the partners, their desire for free movement, their membership of other groups, but also turns communal habits into symbols, customs and rituals and is perhaps also in a position to create myths.
The link to the working side of the coevolution process presented attempts to establish today’s business ethics, since each national economy based on the division of labour should still be understood as a mutual alliance. The increase in the fullness of life (and not only in the volume of goods), in terms of independently selectable development possibilities, moves into sight. The desired economic rights for citizens require as a basis an economic ethics, according to which the individual readily proposes to only pursue certain goals that are compatible with the legitimate regulations of an organised society of free and equal citizens. A company should be required to have an independent self-commitment to the principles of business integrity in its dealings with all stakeholders and of ethical responsibility for the common good (corporate citizenship). The subject of business ethics is the morality of companies, which manifests itself in the company culture. Meaningful value and thought approaches lead to the formation of a company-specific identity (corporate identity), which finds its form in systems of recognition and participation. Not all company leaders have yet realised that recognition and fairness in business will be the determining success factors in the future and not just the control of the market mechanism.
A bridge has also still not been built between business ethics and family ethics. Both are still standing like iron blocks side by side. In the updated concepts of business ethics there is still an “above and below” in business, a structure, as always arranged hierarchically, of instructors and executors, whereas in the family of well trained and intellectually educated people (our target group) a joint structure based on partnership prevails.
A man can no longer establish himself in one world or the other, because society, and therefore also the world of work, intervenes in the family with new regulatory policy programmes. At a minimum it intensifies the ethical conflict between work and family, when it does not succeed in developing new ethical rules for the working world that also coincide with family ethics. The concept of “servant leadership” could be such a set of rules.
The core ethical idea, that is the protection of the personal living space of an employee from the control of and dependence on the company and the state, decreases more and more, because with family support programmes both company and state penetrate deep into the heart of the previously familial self-image. The family is visibly permeated by society. On the other hand, democratisation processes are proceeding in companies. They began with the delegation of responsibility top-down decades ago and now seem increasingly to be going into reverse, as a wave of individualisation from the bottom up is changing company structures and processes. It leads to the abandonment of normal working relationships and to the organization of new life blueprints, to careers adjusted to phases of life that lead to patchwork life stories. But whoever does not want the growing influence of society on his family will only accept those family-social benefits from the state and company family programmes that leave him a maximum of family independence. He will begin to search for his own coping strategies at work.
In this investigation, the sense of coherence proves to be not only a personality construct but also a resource. Coherence experience is a resource for health and at the same time an element of health. The approaches to solutions for the compatibility of work and family follow two guiding principles, that of sequential compatibility and that of simultaneous compatibility. If we, as presented, follow the guiding principle of simultaneous compatibility, we have to search for personal requirements, instinctive motives and competences, which activate self-fulfilment processes that lead to higher identification in both work and family. Instinctive motives are the described flow experience, the personal recognition, which is based on aggressive instinct and the attachment to the work group, catering for the desire for achievement. The professional ability of managers is their qualified social competence, which means not the control over others but over oneself. It is in keeping with the Christian virtues of wisdom, cleverness and moderation.
Managers’ development as personality development leads us to the most important approach to a solution for conflicts in the world of work – the “servant leadership”. This is not a concept, nor a technique, rather a lifestyle. It is a question of asking what I can do for others, so that they can further develop personally and successfully realise common goals. “Servant leadership”, as was developed by Robert Greenleaf in 1970, follows a holistic consideration of the qualities of people, work and community spirit and presupposes a spiritual understanding of identity, mission, vision and environment. With this approach we find ourselves right in the individual “corridor of action”, in order to manage on the one hand conflicts at work as a manager and on the other hand in the family as a spouse, and to be able to cope with the conflicts between both areas of life. Servant leadership at work is the key to lessening the tension between career and family. The core elements of servant leadership are described in detail. From these a new type of manager can develop, who casts off his/her primal fear and wins a new sense of basic trust, which strengthens his/her sense of coherence at work.
The social behaviour of individuals in our Western societies moves between two poles – individualisation and collectivisation. How will it develop in the future? We combine our suggestions for solutions from the preceding chapters into a complex whole. The theoretically and empirically safeguarded parenthesis, which binds all coping strategies presented, is the salutogenesis concept. To comprehend the finding of meaning and identity in work and in the family as an integrated coeveolution process, we must overcome the short-term thinking of an impatient society and the related conflict between character and experience. Since the experience of an incoherent era threatens the ability of a person to shape his/her character into a sustainable life story.
Coming generations will successfully develop a group sense of coherence, when the group to which one belongs succeeds in achieving a joint vision of the world – namely in the family and in the world of work. The group awareness required grows out of the collective behaviour of group members, which finds its expression in myths, rituals, humour, speech and ceremonies.
The coping strategies that we have presented for both groups – family and work team –, overlap, but are not congruent. The best approach to a solution for the coevolution of work and family would be, if it succeeded, to make both coping strategies congruent. Several paths towards this goal seem practicable, if we relate partnership management to the working world and servant leadership to the family, i.e. interweave both coping scenarios together:
The first describes partnership management at work. It requires two or three people, who share power and pool their strengths in order to reach the same goals. This method of management is based on individuals behaving as partners, developing a common vision, setting goals and taking on responsibility together. Leadership in a partnership is indivisible; it must encompass all decision-making situations in business and cannot only be limited to project work.
The second describes servant leadership in the family. Here the actors in the family learn to serve themselves, and also develop a greater servitude towards each other. They will learn to recognise as resources the core elements of servant leadership - active listening, empathy, awareness, persuasiveness, imagination, foresight and responsible dealings with others – and to develop a stronger sense of coherence in the family. They are on the right path towards becoming a “family servant leader” who recognises that conflict within and outside of the family has an understandable, manageable and meaningful solution.
The coping strategies presented - partnership management at work and servant leadership in the family - are supported by what we have described as servitude. Coevolution of work and family can then succeed if people lead responsibly and with integrity in both spheres of life. That presupposes behaviour that is built on truthfulness instead of manipulation, that resolves conflicts fairly instead of suppressing them or letting them violently fight it out, that conciliates relationships instead of fighting for power and that puts others’ interests before its own. A noble goal? Goal attainment begins with the first step!
Whether the self-responsibility of the individual for solving conflict can be permanently kept free from new social expectations, influences or even compulsions, which then postulate a new image of humanity, remains to be seen.

Avec ses « fils et fibres à l’origine de la création », première étape de la filière textile, Expofil présente l’offre et le savoir-faire spécifiques de ses exposants au sein de Première Vision Pluriel, et complète ce dispositif unique destiné aux acheteurs internationaux de la filière textile-mode.
Laboratoire des matières de demain, c’est un lieu de recherche et de propositions nouvelles de fils et de fibres à forte valeur ajoutée. Chaque saison apporte son lot d’innovations. Les recherches menées ces dernières années par les producteurs de fibres et les filateurs dans l’utilisation des nouvelles technologies et dans les matières alternatives leur ont permis de développer des produits qui sont devenus incontournables dans toutes les collections à valeur ajoutée, de la couture au sportswear : fibres issues des protéines animales, fibres recyclées, traitements haute performance (anti-bactérien, anti-statique, anti-UV…), pour n’en citer que quelques uns.
L’offre d’Expofil, qui transcende la notion de saison, s’est adaptée avec réactivité à l’évolution de la profession. Cette édition, les exposants proposent l’avant-première de la saison printemps été 10, et l’actualisation de la saison hiver 09 10, la saison qui est présentée sur Première Vision. Ce dispositif répond aussi au fractionnement des collections et à la création en continue, qui obligent les professionnels à travailler plusieurs collections en simultané.

HEBEI JIGAO CHEMICAL FIBER (Chine) : très axée sur l’écologie et le développement durable, cette société transforme les matières végétales (bambou, coton, chanvre, lin) qu’elle commercialise sous forme de pulpe, de fibre ou de viscose. Ses principaux marchés sont la maille rectiligne et le tissage pour habillement.
KARSU TEKSTIL (Turquie) : premier filateur mondial de Modal, dont il a l’exclusivité en Turquie, Karsu est un partenaire privilégié de Lenzing avec lequel il s’associe pour créer une nouvelle fibre qui sera lancée sur Expofil. Cette société produit 15 000 tonnes de fils par an à base de fibres diverses (coton, viscose, lin, laine, bambou, soja, Tencel) sur technologies ring, open-end et air-jet.
MURATA MACHINERY (Japon) : ce fabricant de machines japonais présente son procédé de filature Vortex à jet d’air, utilisable pour toutes les fibres (coton mais aussi synthétiques, fibres régénérées, etc.). Les fils produits selon cette technologie ont, entre autres caractéristiques, une très bonne résistance au boulochage, à l’abrasion et au lavage.
On note également le retour de l’Italien Fil Man Made, société de grande dimension spécialiste des fils de performances, et du Français Filatures du Parc qui présente sa collection axée sur le développement durable utilisant des fils à base de matière régénérée.
La mode
Scénographié cette saison par Luc Jimenez, le forum allie naturel et artificiel, imaginaire et science, réalité et interprétation graphique par le biais de silhouettes découpées vivement colorées qui évoquent la magie de la nature avec ses arbres, ses animaux et ses insectes contrastant avec des structures plus industrielles et urbaines. On retrouve sur cet espace l’avant-première printemps/été 2010 des exposants d’Expofil, un focus sur les avancées technologiques et les nouvelles matières, ainsi qu’une sélection d’actualisation des fils et fibres de l’automne-hiver 09/10.
La cohabitation fils/tissus se poursuit sur le forum « Pulsation » du hall 5 où des machines, infernales, généreuses, imaginaires, présentent les innovations des producteurs de fibres, des filateurs et des tisseurs, autour du thème de la performance.
Au moment où les marques de mode cherchent à se différencier les unes des autres, la créativité et la valeur ajoutée apparaissent comme des éléments essentiels à l’élaboration d’une collection et, dans ce contexte, Indigo se révèle plus que jamais comme une source d’idées inépuisable. Studios, dessinateurs, créateurs de maille, et autres spécialistes du décor en tout genre mettent leur imagination et leur fantaisie au service d’un savoir-faire alliant la tradition aux techniques les plus modernes. Cette créativité se nourrit des échanges générés au sein de Première Vision Pluriel entre exposants des différents salons et répond aux attentes de tous les métiers de la filière textile/mode.

Conçu cette saison par Héloïse Lorenzo, il porte mieux que jamais son nom en proposant comme une histoire de croisements et de rencontres, symbole de la chaîne de solidarité de tous les métiers présents sur le salon. En son centre se dressent deux grands cadres dans lesquels sont glissées des images empruntées aux thématiques du salon. Des éléments extérieurs viennent en filigrane animer la réalité de l’image et lui donner du volume.
Un focus sur les décors et les orientations de la saison automne-hiver 09-10, spécialement conçu par l’équipe Mode Première Vision Indigo, ouvre le champ à l’expression personnelle et à la liberté d’interprétation des exposants pour une saison qui s’inscrit dans une recherche d’équilibre entre maîtrise et impulsion. Organisé en thématiques, il propose six axes d’inspiration : « observation sensible », « codés recodés », « expressif et volontaire », « naturellement modifié » « répétitions hétérogènes », « mouvances polychromes ».

Première Vision Inc., filiale américaine de Première Vision basée à New York, a racheté Direction, salon international pour le dessin et design textiles leader en Amérique du Nord. Effective depuis le 1er septembre cette reprise permet à Première Vision de renforcer le leadership mondial des salons de dessin et design textiles par l’intermédiaire d’Indigo et d’assurer une présence directe sur le marché américain. La prochaine édition du salon sous sa nouvelle dénomination de Direction by Indigo se tiendra du 13 au 15 janvier 2009 au Penn Plaza aux mêmes dates que Première Vision Preview New York (14-15 janvier au Altmann Building & Metropolitan Pavilion).

HEBEI JIGAO CHEMICAL FIBER (China). Very focused on ecology and sustainable development, this company transforms vegetable materials (bamboo, cotton, hemp, linen), which it markets in the form of pulp, fibre or viscose. Its main markets are circular knitting and woven yarns for clothing.
KARSU TEKSTIL (Turkey): A leading global spinner of Modal, to which it has exclusive rights in Turkey, and a favoured partner of Lenzing. The two companies have collaborated to create a new fibre, which will be launched at Expofil. This company produces 15,000 tonnes of yarn per year made from various fibres (cotton, viscose, linen, wool, bamboo, soya, Tencel) with ring, open-end and air-jet techniques.
MURATA MACHINERY (Japan): This Japanese machine manufacturer presents its Vortex air-jet spinning process, used for all fibres (cotton, but also synthetic and regenerated fibres, etc.). The yarns produced with this technique are, among other things, very resistant to pilling, abrasion and washing.
We also see the return of Fil Man Made, a large Italian company specialising in performance yarns, and of the French company Filatures du Parc, which will display a collection focused on sustainable development using yarns made from regenerated material.
Fashion
Designed this season by Luc Jimenez, the forum unites the natural and the artificial, the imaginary and the scientific, reality and graphic interpretation using vividly-coloured, cut-out shapes which evoke the magic of nature, with trees, animals and insects, contrasting with more industrial and urban structures. There you will find a preview of Spring/Summer 2010 by the Expofil exhibitors, a focus on technological advances and new materials, as well as an updated selection of yarns and fibres for Autumn/Winter 09/10.
The yarns/fabrics cooperation continues in the “Pulsation” forum in Hall 5, where machines, at the same time infernal, industrious and imaginary, present innovations by fibre producers, spinners and weavers, relating to the theme of performance.
At a time when fashion brands strive to differentiate themselves from one another, creativity and added value are essential elements in the development of a collection. In this context, Indigo is proving to be, more than ever, an endless source of ideas. Studios, designers, knitwear designers, and other specialists in all kinds of décor devote their imagination and fantasy to the skill of combining tradition and up-to-date techniques. This creativity feeds on the interactions between exhibitors from across Première Vision Pluriel and meets the expectations of all branches of the textile fashion industry.

The number of exhibitors remains consistent in comparison with September 2007.
The UK still accounts for the highest proportion of exhibitors (45%), followed by France (19%) and Italy (15%). The American studios remain in fourth place with 9% of exhibitors.

Encounters area
Indigo promotes exhibitors’ creations in a dedicated space – the Encounters area.
Designed this season by Héloïse Lorenzo, it has never better deserved its name. It offers a story of crossings and encounters, symbolising the support network of all professions present at the exhibition. At the centre, two large frames will show images taken from the themes of the exhibition. Outer elements will animate the reality of the image from behind the scenes and give it volume.
A focus on décors and projections for Autumn/Winter 09/10, designed by the Première Vision Indigo Fashion Team, paves the way for personal expression and freedom of interpretation by exhibitors for a season which is involved in a search for balance between mastery and impulse. Organised into themes, it offers six inspirational subjects: “sensitive observation”, “coded recoded”, “expressive and determined”, “naturally altered”, “miscellaneous repetitions”, “polychrome influences”.
Texprint
As honoured sponsor of Texprint, Indigo continues its successful cooperation with the British competition by welcoming the 24 young designers selected this year. Among them are the five competition winners: Victoria Shepherd (interior fashion), Eleanor Feddon (colour), Ella Jade (knit), Elizabeth Jones (weave), Helen Stark (innovation). Their prizes will be awarded at Indigo on Wednesday 24th September at 15.00 by Sir Paul Smith.
Première Vision acquires Direction
Première Vision Inc., the American subsidiary of Première Vision based in New York, has acquired Direction, the leading international exhibition for textile design in North America. This acquisition, effective from 1st September, allows Première Vision to strengthen the global leadership of the textile design exhibitions through Indigo and to guarantee a direct presence on the American market. The next edition of the exhibition under its new name of ‘Direction by Indigo’ will take place from 13th to 15th January 2009 at Penn Plaza, at the same time as Première Vision Preview New York (14th-15th January at the Altmann Building and the Metropolitan Pavilion).
