Ask most anyone who knows Shanghai, and the prevailing images he will summon about the city concern its newness. This city, after all, has become famous for its proliferation of fanciful skyscrapers, its expressways, bridges and tunnels and its magnetic levitation train.
There is another Shanghai, meanwhile, that we are all vaguely familiar with, but which few bother to think much about or get to know well. Increasingly, this is the Shanghai of the past.
Seen from another angle, Shanghai is China's oldest modern city, the product of a wave of globalization that began more than a century before that word ever came into vogue. For all of our excitement about the rise of a new Shanghai, we have cause to mourn the passage of this old Shanghai, which I have styled ‘Disappearing Shanghai,’ as a title for my portrait of the city.

Playing with the Musical Triangle
1. With the help of the On/Off indicator, locate the musical unit inside the triangle (Fig. 4).
2. Open the flap and move the switch to the ON position (Fig. 5) You will hear a beep confirming that the toy has been turned on. Close the flap.
3. Now tap on the triangle to hear a happy tune.
4. At the end of play, we recommend that you turn the musical unit OFF by moving the ON/OFF switch to the OFF position.
