The term occurs at the end of a Swiss licensing contract and just before the signatures in a section headed "Loi applicable - Attibution de jurisdiction". The text reads "Le présent Contrat est régi par la loi Suisse. Il engage les Parties identifiées en tête des présentes [used throughout to mean the contract] à compter de sa signature par les représentants habilités de chacune d'elles, à la date indiquée ci-dessous. Toute litige relatif à l'interprétation, exécution ou la résiliation du présent contrat ou de toute License, qui ne pourrait être résolu de façon amiable, devra être soumis à la competence exclusive d'un Tribunal de Commerce." The signatures, preceded by the words "Accepté par le CONCÉDANT Accepté par le LICENCIÉ" come immediately below.

Comment: "Thanks. This is a case of where someone (me) gets on the wrong mental foot. For some reason I took "à compter de" as an infinitive governed by "il engage les parties ", i.e. in other words it commits the parties to do something, namely to "compter de sa signature" which my foggy mind perceived as a mysterious legalism, instead of seeing, as I should have (and normally would have, that "à compter de " is simply an adverbial modifier of "engager". I'm not actually normally quite this dim, but I guess I got a case of twisted synapsis. Sorry for wasting your time. Regards, Tom"
