Coated pits = Regions of the cell membrane which are coated with bristle-like structures on their cytoplasmic surface and are involved in endocytosis. The coated pit is pinched off to form a coated vesicle, which is involved in intracellular vesicle transport between the cell's organelles.

Coated pits are small, rapidly forming structures that deform the underlying membrane by progressive recruitment of clathrin, adaptors, and other regulatory proteins. They ultimately close off and bud inward to form coated vesicles.
