final/term project

If there was more than one project, or the project constitutes the final examination, then you can use the word final project.

If their is only one project, but the project does not constitute the final examination, then you can use the word term project.
Peer comment(s):

agree Richard Benham : Yes to "final". That's where the "abschließend" comes into it. Some kind of final project or dissertation seems pretty well compulsory for degrees in the German-speaking countries.

capstone project

I'd use final project for a term or year, but the German custom of having a cumulative exam at the end would be better conveyed by using the capstone concept; this is at least familiar to Americans (as the 'crowning' event of a course of studies, rather than just a term)
Example sentence:

Peer comment(s):

neutral Roddy Stegemann : I do not believe that this is a cumulative examination; rather, it is a significantly weighted project. // What we mean to say, what we actually say, and what is understood are not always the same.

I never said that; but this is the closest approximation
