German term

untätige Rechte

German to English Social Sciences History Middle East
Still with the poem about Iran in the Middle Ages. The words in parentheses are shown like that in the poem.

Fürwahr, ihr solltet es mit europäischen (Gewehren) färben/ und ihr beliebet auf den folgsamen (Pferden) mit untätigen Rechten. / Es-Salt muß folgen und es belibt daselbst kein Freiheitssinn.

The nearest I can get at the moment is "passive rights" but it sounds a bit legal for a poem about Persian warriors about to sack a city. Any poetic thoughts, anyone?

@Valpeter: I don't quite understand how this would fit. "Lazy/inactive rights"? Sorry, but could you explain a bit more? Thanks

2 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks everyone. In the end I used a combination of your contributions, but probably closest to Valpeter's "right hand inactive on the sword" idea. If I could, I'd give everyone a point as you all helped me get there!"

privileged to be idle

You horse haters! :-)

Their horses were so valued, they weren't used for lower work. So they had time off between wars. Other than that, they were allowed to sleep in the tents and in case the owner would run out of food or water, the horse would receive the very last bite or sip.

(As a kid I owned an Arabian horse and devoured all related literature I could get hold off)
