Discussion

Gilmar Fernandes May 7, 2013:
Hi Sue, For whatever technical glitch here, I don't get notifications of these discussion entries in my e-mail like I used to. I've already submitted support tickets in the past and nothing was resolved......go figure. Anyway, just seeing your question now. Well if you want to use the word slaves, I suppose it may work, but I wouln't use "free" since that conveys another idea....I believe here they're making the comparisson of "releasing" the cattle out to pasture. Do you follow what I'm saying ? Bom trabalho, Sue.
Also see the meaning of "eito":
Michaelis Dictionary
sm 1 sequence, row, succession. 2 bras clearing of a plantation by groups working with hoes. 3 bras, Hist plantation or field where Negro slaves worked. a eito uninterruptedly, continually, without intermission.

Would "Free the slaves!" fit, Gilmar?

With our colleague Luciano's help who kindly posted the reference, I'm just elaborating on the idea, expressed here. I can't be sure either, but I suspect my suggestion sort of conveys the idea of what this expression used in the sugar-cane industry means.
