There's no doubt that the tribes do not "exterminate each other" - in fact, I'm not even sure if EXTERMINATE is the correct word at all. From my POV it is too harsh and, at least at first glance, it is hard to imagine "a tribe exterminating itself" (not that this verb is reflexive in the original).

There's a whole big issue in semantics about whether we cause ourselves to die or whether it happens to us.

I don't think it means they exterminate each other...they are exterminated by various factors, etc.

I'm not convinced this would fit the context, either ... "The Indians are exterminated either by factors X or Y"
