core or basic, if describing subject

That is, an undispensable subject of the curriculum.

key

I need more context. "key" would be the standard translation.

key, preface

In general clave means key as in key words, references, etc. but I have seen it used as preface as in preface to a book.

Main Subject

Probably one of the main 'units' or 'subject' in the syllabus.

See the website for Facultad de Agronomía de la Universidad de Bs. As., and you'll see there's no subject that meets the description, but there are some highlighted as important.

Hope it helps!
