This appears in a text about stars, galaxies and the universe. The language is not too technical as it is for a voice over to go with a family show at a planetarium.

Nunca nos cansamos de ver las imágenes increibles que los modernos telescopios nos ofrecen de las nebulosas. Diseminadas por toda la bóveda celeste aparecen paisajes espectaculares de dimensiones inimaginables... Algunas son restos de estrellas que murieron. Estos **jirones de gas** incandescentes fueron expulsados en silenciosas explosiones cósmicas, supernovas de tipo 2 que hoy somos capaces de describir.

Would I be right to call these 'shreds of gas' Thank you.
