Source text - English The problem of being awkward with introductions is not, for many, an “unusual situation.” You may find that you are often uncertain about whether to introduce someone using their first name, last name, or both; about whether to use a qualifier (“this is my friend, ______”); even about whether or not it is in fact your responsibility to introduce two people in a given situation. But all of this is small potatoes compared with the seemingly inevitable mingling nightmare of having to introduce someone whose name you have forgotten.
It’s one thing to forget someone’s name if you’ve met them only once or twice, or if you haven’t seen them in a while. But all too often it’s someone whose name you really should know, and who is going to be insulted to find out you don’t. In other words, a faux pas in the making.
This is absolute agony when it happens, and I’ve watched hundreds of minglers try to deal with different ways, ranging from exuberant apology (“Oh GOD, I’m so sorry, JEEZ, wow, I can’t believe I’ve forgotten your name!”) to throwing up their hands and walking away. But there are better ways to deal with this kind of mental slip. Next time you draw a blank while making introductions, try the following ploy:
Force them to introduce themselves. This is the smoothest and most effective way to handle your memory lapse. When it’s done well, no one will ever suspect you. If you have forgotten one person’s name in the group, turn to that person first and smile. Then turn invitingly to a person whose name you do remember and say, “This is Linden Bond,” turning back casually toward the forgotten person. The person whose name you haven’t mentioned yet will automatically (it’s a reflex) say “Nice to meet you, Linden, I’m Sylvia Cooper,” and usually offer a hand to shake.

Gyakran bizonytalanok lehetünk abban, hogy a kereszt-, vezeték-, vagy esetleg a teljes nevén mutassuk-e be az illetőt, vagy hogy használjunk-e valamilyen meghatározást (… „a barátom”). Akár még afelől is lehetnek kétségeink, hogy egyáltalán a mi feladatunk-e egy adott helyzetben két embert bemutatni egymásnak.
Mindez azonban semmi ahhoz a rémálomhoz képest, amit akkor élhetünk át, ha olyan valakit kell bemutatnunk, akinek elfelejtettük a nevét.
Elfelejteni valakinek a nevét, akivel mindössze egyszer-kétszer találkoztunk, vagy akit egy ideje nem láttunk, bocsánatos bűn. Azonban a kelleténél többször okoz fejtörést olyan emberek neve, akikre pedig igazán emlékeznünk kellene, és akik nagyon megsértődnének, ha észrevennék zavarunkat. Más szóval, komoly bakit készülünk elkövetni.
Kész gyötrelem, ha megtörténik. Már számtalan ilyen esetet láttam a legváltozatosabb reakciókkal, a túláradó mentegetőzéstől („Oh, Istenem, úgy sajnálom! Jesszusom, hogy felejthettem el a nevét?!”) az ismerősök faképnél hagyásáig. Azonban van egy jobb módszer az ilyen átmeneti memóriazavar kezelésére. Ha legközelebb mellényúlna egy ilyen helyzetben, próbálja ki a következő trükköt:
Késztesse őket arra, hogy ők maguk mutatkozzanak be egymásnak! Ez az emlékezetkihagyás legegyszerűbb és egyben leghatékonyabb kezelési módja. Ha elég ügyes, senki sem fogja észrevenni pillanatnyi zavarát. Source text - English When my wife told me she was pregnant, I got that stomach-churning sensation that hits you on a plunging roller coaster. I was excited, yes, but... oh my God. Parenting was for, well, parents.
So here I stand, bug-eyed and sweating buckets like some poorly-drawn cartoon character, the question marks floating in the air around my head while I try to prepare myself for the complete care and responsibility of another living being besides my cat. I'm responsible for making sure this little human doesn't grow up and turn into a complete monster. If the child turns out a social moron-- my fault. If the babe can't find Luxembourg on the map, blame me for not providing a better education. They'll need therapy, and of course that will be on my head too. So many opportunities for wrong turns!
I remember the day my father sat me down and awkwardly told me about the birds and the bees; it was perhaps the most excruciating and embarrassing half hour of both our lives. I can't do that to another human being.
Maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself here. I can do this, I say; I'll be a great father. My child will be reared a well-rounded, educated, upstanding citizen of the world, and he or she won't hate me.
And then I imagine the baby, still safe within the confines of my wife's belly, suddenly opening an alarmed eye as the thought enters his or her mind: "What if my dad just can't hack it?
Translation - Hungarian Amikor a feleségem közölte velem, hogy terhes, hirtelen elfogott az a gyomorszorító érzés, amit egy lefelé száguldó hullámvasúton érez az ember… Igen, izgatott voltam, de… ó Istenem… A gyerekvállalás, hát az bizony érett embereknek való…
Szóval itt állok, kigúvadt szemekkel és verejtékben úszva, mint egy félresikerült rajzfilmfigura, kérdőjelek lebegnek a levegőben a fejem körül, miközben megpróbálok felkészülni arra, hogy a macskámon kívül egy másik élőlény is lesz az életemben, akiről gondoskodnom kell, és akiért felelősséggel tartozom majd. Az én felelősségem lesz, hogy ez a kis emberi lény ne váljon szörnyeteggé, ha felnő. Ha a gyerek teljesen antiszociális lesz, az is miattam történik. Ha nem találja meg Luxemburgot a térképen, engem hibáztassanak, amiért nem biztosítottam neki jobb oktatást! Terápiára lesz szüksége és természetesen ez is az én lelkemen szárad. Megannyi hibalehetőség!
Élénken él bennem annak a napnak az emléke, amikor apám leültetett és a madarakról meg a méhekről hebegett valamit, talán az volt mindkettőnk életének leggyötrelmesebb és legkínosabb félórája. Képtelen vagyok megtenni ezt egy másik emberrel…
Talán túlságosan előreszaladok. Meg tudom csinálni, meg én! Nagyszerű apa lesz belőlem! Az én gyerekem egy sokoldalú, művelt, egyenes polgára lesz a világnak és nem fog utálni engem.
És akkor elképzelem a babát, még biztonságban, az anyja hasában, amint hirtelen tágranyitja riadt szemeit, mintha ez futna át az agyán: „Mi van, ha Apa mégse képes rá?”
