I once translated a letter addressed to an Italian woman and disagreed with its content. Of course, my job was just to translate the letter, but I wished I could have spoken to her to tell her what I thought of it.

I once proofread a large file from English to German.
First reading the German, I simply couldn't make ends meet in some passages.
Then reading the English - the alleged original, apparently translated by a non-English speaker - and w could speak to who ever translated both versions.
Also I've translated a website and wished I could meet the owners of said site; they seemed and still seem to be very interesting people. ... See more I once proofread a large file from English to German.

"Translating about", so I assume you mean the content not the authors.
I'm translating about plants and bugs, and similar stuff, so some of "the main characters" I meet personally on the daily basis

I did some translations about artists and performers at a music/arts festival and wished i could meet a couple of them. Usually the things I translate about aren't people, or they're people I'm not sure I want to meet, i.e. a case study of a parolee or sexual offender!

Mostly if I am translating "about" someone, the person is either a criminal or someone who is in trouble over crooked business deals or other civil matters. My colleagues who work as interpreters in the courts do have to meet such people. I don't, I just deal with documents.

I translated the homepage of an cosmology institute whose president is nobody else than Stephen Hawking, of course I'd die to meet him!

I share Henry's concerns about court interpreting, particularly if you run up against mafia bosses... but yes, I would like to meet, and have corresponded with, respected philosophers, artists, archaeologists and historians (the dead ones are obviously out of the question) and brilliant scientific researchers.

There are also great writers I've done short pieces with, some of whom keep me on a short list for whenever they can find the funding to publish more pieces. And some have actually become friends.

I *almost* had the opportunity to meet Chuck Yeager, the first pilot to break the sound barrier, at an air show here in Columbus (Ohio) a couple of years ago. Unfortunately he was unable to attend "due to prior commitments." He was about 86 at the time! I had just translated a brief bio about him. I was sooo disappointed!
