Yes, but... Aug 24, 2023

...I was not informed that the translation was AI-generated until after I had completed it and provided negative feedback regarding its quality. The client admitted they were testing out AI to assess its performance and mentioned their belief that in a year's time, the landscape would change significantly, with AI translation quality improving dramatically. While I'm not a proponent of conspiracy theories, it's evident that our profession may become obsolete in the near future.

Anyway, I’m not at all interested in post-editing translations generated by AI. I’m at the end of my career and I only do what I like doing and disentangling and correcting unintelligible texts generated by a machine, even an "intelligent" one, will be answered with a big no…

Not about post-editing MT output Aug 24, 2023

This question is not about post-editing MT output but about translating content which has been generated by artificial intelligence.

I don't think I ever have translated AI-generated content, but one potential problem with AI-generated content would be that in cases where the text is unclear, ambiguous or wrong you have no one to go back to and ask what they actually meant.

I have never been explicitly asked to translate AI-generated content and I am about 99.9999% sure that I in fact haven't translated any. Though to be honest, I would probably have a hard time telling AI-generated marketing drivel from human-written marketing drivel.

But neural machine translation engines are artificial intelligence.

You’re right! I misunderstood the question… So far, I haven’t been asked to translate AI-generated content but the day I do my answer will be the same as to PEMT output…

Confusion Aug 25, 2023

The question is confusingly phrased, which is perhaps why some people misunderstood it.

Taking the question as written, it seems a bit of an unlikely scenario to me. If somebody wants to generate garbage text in, say, Mongolian, why would they first generate the text in, say, Urdu, and then get somebody to translate it, rather than generating the garbage text directly in Mongolian from the start?

It doesn't make a lot of sense.

But why would you *translate* MT?

Actually you can totally ask ChatGPT what it meant, or point out errors. It won't necessarily correct them, but it is at least apologetic.
In my experience, some human clients might laugh and say "oh yeah right that's nonsense, it was supposed to be X" but it's a minority. I have sometimes had to resort to telling clients "if you don't answer my questions in time for me to meet your deadline, I'm going to assume the answer to all of them is Yes" and they are rarely apologetic.

You don’t. I was only pointing out the clash between the poll question and Tom’s remark. By definition, MT are narrow or weak AI designed for one specific purpose only. I know the pollster was asking about ChatGPT and other large language model technologies.

Buuuuuut, I suppose I should’ve already gotten used to ProZ.com poll questions being as ambiguous as they can possibly muster.

I have got a friend been asked to do so recently. She rejected as she noticed it's an AI generated document. As for me, I would reject as well. AI unable to answer any unclear questions arised prior to assignment starts. Therefore, accuracy is not guaranteed.
