sécu titre

An agreement between production companies stipulates that if the 'Société de Production Exécutive' is responsible for post-production of a film, it must 'respect de la sécu titre'. I found the following explanation on Google but have so far been unable to find the equivalent in English: 'La marge interne, dite "Sécu Titre", est la plus importante.

title safe area
Because traditional film projection in cinemas has extremely variable margins (!), a 'title safe area' has traditionally been defined and is marked in camera viewfinders, the idea being that this area, smaller than the full frame, will always be visible in ALL cinemas; there is also an intermediate area called 'action safe area', which can be used for important action that will be visible in ALMOST ALL cinemas.

Note that the word 'area' CAN be omitted, but personally I think it is more explicit WITH it; the illustration I have shared reverses the word order, but i don't think this is standard terminology.

This 'variable display area' was also applicable, of course in the 'olden days' of TVs with CRT displays, but is no longer really an issue with modern LCD etc. displays, where the margins are completely fixed..
