Hi Lysander, I got exactly the same letter yesterday. I was not going to respond, but googled his name anyway and came across with your post. Someone is just collecting the info on interpreters? Mika | | | Received the same | Oct 11, 2010 |
Not only he doesn't tell which language his wife speaks, he doesn't even bother to check in which country he is writing. Infact he doesn't even know that I am Italian, cannot surely go to the USA to interpret Wow those scams start becoming ridicoulous.... P.S. Update, I understand now, apparently he is writing to the ATA members.

I received the same exact email three times today. Smells like a dead fish. He doesn't say what language his wife and children speak. Why would he not provide that information? He wants YOU to tell him what languages YOU provide services in. Are his wife and kids miraculously going to be proficient in whatever language you interpret? How does he communicate with them? Why can't he interpret for them himself? Don't fall for it.

I've received the same "job offer" - here's how it plays out | Jan 28, 2011 |
I'm in Spain by the way He sends a cheque for *your fee* plus 5,000€ - supposedly for DC's travel expenses. The idea is that you keep your fee and transfer the rest via Western Union to "his travel agent" - another name - in Kensington High Street, London. I was in my bank this AM, the cheque is probably bogus - it's drawable on a Spanish account (not "Almond Foods") but contains anomalies I'm going to the Guardia Civil this PM to report the case
I actually got a quote approved, blocked a week of my work time and had several email discussions with this person. I thought it was a little odd, but I've had real customers who have worked out fine this way. I did find the whole thing strange when there was no company info at Company House UK, that this was a senior accountant without email on their cell phone, and that they rich enough to book an interpreter for a personal holiday yet there was no info about this person on the net. The day he was supposed to turn up with his family, surprise, no call. Suprise, the hotel he has booked to stay at has no knowledge of this reservation. Needless to say, I am pissed off. Luckily, I didn't lose any work time and got work straight away, so no financial losses. I'm mainly just bewildered by the whole thing. But won't lose anymore time worrying about it. Just so you know: this person is presenting as David Carrick a "senior accountant at Almond Foods UK". I am not a member of ATA so no connection there, but I am a member of NZSTI and SFT.
