Dear All,
I may need an InDesign specialist soon (this will turn out later today) for the following task:
I have a Hungarian text of about 460000 characters (about 320 pages in B/5). This has to be properly and professionally set by about May 14th. The text has to be sent to the printing press by the 19th.

I don't know what software the current DTP specialist uses, but there are some major problems with hyphenation. As far as I know, it is possible to set hyphenation limists in InDesign (certain number of characters before and after the hyphenation marks, etc.).
As I mentioned, I will know later today if and when I will need an InDesign specialist. If you are one, and can handle Hungarian texts (with the built-in and add-on tools), please contact me or reply here.
As a rough estimate, how much time would be necessary for this job? How much would you charge?
What else should I specify? I'm happy with the current layout (fonts, margins, etc.), only the hyphenation sucks badly.
(The current DTP guy says it's impossible to set hyphenation rules in his software - but again, I have no idea what software he uses, and I cannot ask, because we are not in direct contact with each other.)

First para on InDesign's (CS2) help page re. "Hyphenation and spelling dictionaries"
"By default, hyphenation and spelling rules are based on the dictionary for the language specified for the text. You can create user dictionaries, use multiple dictionaries to spell-check or hyphenate a document, and import or export word lists saved in a plain text file."

Hyphenation rules are generally more specific than just x number of characters before/after. For example, main rule in Swedish is between consonants (but there are other rules). If InDesign has language specific rules (as this seems to imply), that would solve a lot of problems.
I'm by no means an expert, just generally trying to get to know the software. If you want me to check whether my in-house company's expert does any freelance work, just contact me through my profile. Please note that she doesn't, to my knowledge, understand Hungarian, but she does set pages in a variety of languages on a regular basis. ▲ Collapse

Hi Csaba,
This is a well-known shortcoming with InDesign.
Any professional publishing house would use third party spelling and hyphenation plugins, and not rely on the very basic tools that are shipped with CS3.
I went to a seminar hosted by ITIP, and their tools are leading on all "odd" European languages. They are pretty much the market standard here.
OK, it's not for free, but for a huge document like that, the investment is well worth it!
