Selvstyremand

Danish to English Social Sciences General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Writing in 1908, a Danish man publicly accused of harboring anti-Faroese sentiments while living and working in the Faroes defended himself in a letter to the editor of a Faroese newspaper. He wrote: "Et saadant Standpunkt, som jeg her har fremsat, vil ogsaa enhver virkelig frisindet Selvstyremand have, og jeg selv er Selvstyremand til Fingerspidserne, dog ikke Separatist."

believer in home government

Believer in home government
There have been many discussions about home rule and self government in the history of the Faroes.

The Faroese are really too small a population to be an entirely independent nation in the modern world, but in their isolated position, and with their own language and history, they have an identity apart from the other Scandinavian nations.

The islands are administered by Denmark and subjects of the Danish monarch.

In spring 2000, the Landsstýri (home government) and the Danish government entered into negotiations concerning the Faroese proposal of a treaty which would involve sovereignty within a loose commonwealth of the Faroe Islands and Denmark, including joint monarchy, monetary union and collaboration in various other areas. In October 2000, the negotiations reached a deadlock and in spring 2001, it remains uncertain how the relationship between the Faroe Islands and Denmark will develop in the future.

self-governing man

suggestion - someone who is capable of handling his own life and not making excuses or blaming someone else for what happens in his life.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Michael Davies : I don't think this is a correct interpretation - I believe 'selvstyre' refers to the country and not to an individual.

disagree Eva Harbo Andersen (X) : In my opinion, self--governing man gives the wrong connotations here.

This is just an alternative to Christine Andersen's "believer in home government".
