Portuguese term

base (in this context)

Portuguese to English Social Sciences Mathematics & Statistics opinion surveys
In an opinion survey I'm doing, the pages displaying the results mainly have a footnote saying "Base: Total de inquiridos (n=764)".

I can't have paid attention to surveys in English newspapers in the past because I can't decide whether "base" is "sample" or something else, like "basis". I can tell you that the sample size is 800 people.

Please ONLY ANSWER if you are prepared to support your answer with web references that I can check. Wild guesses and one-word answers without evidence are no use to me, so if you are that type of answerer please keep quiet.

Discussion

isarcat Jul 14, 2008:
Also, experts in a particular area may be so familiar with the terminology they may just want to give you the right term and let YOU look for the references.. And fair enough, it's your work.
isarcat Jul 14, 2008:
No offense, but in English telling someone to "keep quiet" is actually quite offensive (especially. when you're asking for help). You may want to choose your words a tad more carefully..
