Discussion

Christina Paiva (asker) Feb 6, 2014:

algorithm
a set of rules for solving a problem in a finite number of steps, as for finding the greatest common divisor.

Decision procedure, Logic.
a procedure, as an algorithm, for determining in a finite number of steps the validity of any of a certain class of propositions.

* Dúvida: a definição de *decision procedure* caberia na definição da universidade?

Não encontrei *Numerical calculus/calculation* no RH ou em outros dicionários.

Por outro lado, encontrei a definição de *Numerical Analysis* the branch of mathematics dealing with methods for obtaining approximate numerical solutions of mathematical problems. E acredito que este termo não se encaixa na descrição do curso.

Thanks a bunch!

"Numerical Analysis" is a far more common term but "numerical calculus" does exist. Without context, it's impossible to be sure.

disagree andrescardoso : I am sorry but there is no such thing in Math. There is Calculus and Numerical Analysis. Different subjects. Where is the wikipedia entry on the subject.

When you google the expression in Portuguese and ask for a wikipedia entry the browser directs to the topic above. Calculus seems to be a different branch of Mathematics.

agree R. Alex Jenkins : Yes, I agree. In maths we have Numerical Analysis and Algebraic Analysis, the two core components.

The actors
Let us try to trace the history of the first courses in numerical analysis in each country and to give the names of the mathematicians who were pioneers in the teaching of numerical analysis and, thus, were very influential in its development and spreading. Obviously, it is a difficult (and perilous) task to establish such a list and we would like to apologize in advance for errors and omissions. We also would like to thank all colleagues who sent us information (their names are mentioned in parenthesis). Much other information was found on the web.

The first course in numerical analysis were initially taught at the Engineering Schools under the classification “Numerical Calculus”, due to its practical importance for engineers. Of course, at the time, there was not such strong emphasis on convergence of the methods as is required in Numerical Analysis proper, but this does not mean that these questions were ignored. “Numerical Calculus” was started as a regular course approximately at the same time in two places:
