Translation - English Due to the influence of a strong winter pressure pattern, heavy snowfall continues along the coast of the Sea of Japan on the 25th. In Niigata and Tottori, more than 2 meters of snow have been observed. Snow will continue to fall throughout the region in the days ahead, so there is also a need to be on the alert for avalanches and the like.
This is the biggest cold wave to hit the Japanese archipelago this winter, and the coast of the Sea of Japan has experienced another day of heavy snowfall on the 25th.
As of 9 p.m., Tottori City recorded a snow depth of 25 centimeters, more than two times higher than normal for this time of year. At the area in front of the JR Tottori Station in Tottori City, snowfall lulled during the day, but when night came, snow began falling again, and the asphalt on which snow had temporarily disappeared was once again covered completely in white.
These heavy snowfalls throughout areas along the Sea of Japan are brought about by a chill, which is caused by westerly winds and the existence of a "blocking high". Since around mid-January, the flow of westerly winds blowing from the west to the east near the north of Japan has been meandering southward, and this has allowed cold air to easily advance southward near Japan. On top of that, the cold is unable to subside easily due to the blocking high occurring over the sea in the far northeast of Japan.
It is said that this condition will continue until early February.
"There will be continued snowfall along the Sea of Japan in the days ahead until early next month. Some regions may even experience record snowfalls, so please beware of avalanches and snow falling from roofs, etc,” weather forecaster Makoto Yanase warned.
The Japan Meteorological Agency is calling for vigilance in anticipation of a further increase in snowfall along the coast of the Sea of Japan even after the 26th.
