Es la denominación aplicada al movimiento de reacción de la Iglesia Católica contra la Reforma, surgido a partir del Concilio de Trento (1545-1563).
De todas maneras, y por el peso mismo del transcurso histórico, la Iglesia hubiera tenido que cambiar en varios aspectos, y el lo que hace, motivada más aún por la Reforma.
También la Iglesia vuelve a los principios fundamentales que dieron lugar a su nacimiento, y allí encuentra una fuerza renovadora para recuperar su potencia y relanzar su expansión en el mundo.
La Reforma había planteado un retorno a los Evangelios, anulando la tradición católica acumulada durante siglos. La Iglesia vuelve a reafirmar el valor de la tradición, y con ella, de las doctrinas, ceremonias y ritos avalados por el tiempo.
El retorno a los orígenes, en el caso de la Iglesia, no se apoya en la Biblia, sino en sus primeros períodos históricos, en especial el patrístico, en el que comenzó a surgir la organización eclesiástica a partir de la palabra de Cristo, y en el que se fijaron las interpretaciones auténticas de los puntos fundamentales de la fe, así como los ritos y la jerarquía. Renace asimismo el espíritu de proselitismo y de expansión a los primeros tiempos, del que no debe excluirse ningún pueblo de la Tierra.
El Concilio de Trento negó que las Sagradas Escrituras, por sí solas bastasen para salvar al hombre. Negó el principio de la libre interpretación y, al contrario, como en la época de los Padres de la Iglesia, concedió a la Iglesia el derecho exclusivo a la auténtica interpretación de los textos bíblicos. Confirmó su función de mediadora, la necesidad de la jerarquía y, por tanto, de los sacramentos y los ritos.
También se reafirmó el valor de las obras, y el despliegue de órdenes religiosas con que la Iglesia empezó a reforzar su actividad en el mundo, tenía como principal objetivo la filantropía, con énfasis en la educación y la beneficencia. La Iglesia hizo suyo el principio renacentista -a su manera- de extender la religiosidad a todo el mundo y a todos los hombres.

Source text - English The celebration of la Mercè has religious origins, honoring the Virgin of Grace (Mare de Déu de la Mercè), patron saint of the archdiocese of Barcelona, and co-patroness—along with Saint Eulàlia—of the city. In Catalan, the word mercè has meanings related to service, help, a sense of compassion, and loving mercy. In the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona, there is a basilica dedicated to the Virgin, where a wooden image of her is venerated.
The festival has been celebrated since the Middle Ages when, in 1687, Barcelona suffered a plague of locusts. To fight against insects, the Consell de Cent, which then governed the city, voted to ask the Virgin's assistance.
