Mission
The MAS aims to be an international and groundbreaking museum on worldwide connectedness between people and collections originating from a variety of mind-sets and environments. With a continuous stream of stories, perceived from various perspectives, we involve each and every one who is curious about the here and now, the past and the future of Antwerp and the world. We cooperate with the public at large and with a chain of partners, both nationally and internationally. Our diverse collection covers an extensive field of interests and subjects, ranging from the history, art and culture of the port city of Antwerp, to international trade and shipping, and to art, culture and history from Europe, Africa, America, Asia and Oceania. The iconic building of the MAS is the very place where the city and the world meet and it offers a unique space for dialogue and experiment.
Vision
Connection: As a port city, Antwerp has been connected to the world for centuries. The MAS aims to link people from different mind-sets and environments and render their heritage visible and comprehensible. We find inspiration where our collections touch life: in experiences, stories, objects, knowledge and emotions.
The MAS is not only interested in the past; it continuously looks for heritage in the present and glances into the future. We want to use heritage in a present-day and socially relevant context. The museum is a meeting place. From its base in Antwerp, the museum positions itself not only locally but expressly (inter)nationally. The mission of connection follows from the MAS collection, with which we interpret and actualize according to these priorities: (1) the city and port of Antwerp as junctions of the world, (2) cultural diversity locally and globally and the interactions between cultures, (3) the history and ethics of collecting.
Multiperspectivity: In a society where people are empowered and share information ever faster, it is important to be open to one another's vision and viewpoint. The MAS sees an important task for itself in offering different perspectives and, if necessary, providing an interpretation to them. Various collections form the guideline. With the idea that a broad view expands our thinking, the MAS wants to contribute to the development of a global citizenship. It is precisely a vastly diverse city like Antwerp that can provide a breeding ground for growing awareness: each of us belongs to several communities that share one world together. Through heritage, we look for meeting points that invite us to see and reconsider, to reflect and talk about our (own) place in the world.
Experiment: As a museum, MAS strives for a leading position concerning new museum practices. Of course, we start from the process of identification and collection, preservation and safeguard, research, to leadership and presentation and participation. But we also want to experiment with our collections and our building: this way we explore new ways of telling different stories to new audiences. We also want to offer the public and partners an arena for experimentation. We believe that the process can be as important as the final goal. Also in the future, MAS will make a lot of space for creative talent because we believe that mutual trust strengthens our operation. The MAS learns from experiment.
International: With solid footing in Antwerp, where the collections have grown into their current form, the MAS is positioning itself as an international museum. Its international character is firstly and foremost reflected in the origin of the collections. The MAS is also located in a very international environment. The population of Antwerp alone counts 175 nationalities. On a daily basis, we receive visitors from all over the world. Therefore, we strive for recognition and acknowledgement of the different communities in our museum. But, above all, the MAS is international because of the quality of its operation and cooperation with regional, national and international fellow institutions.

Il MAS si pone l’obiettivo di diventare un museo internazionale che apre nuovi orizzonti sull’unione tra gli uomini e l’arte dei diversi mondi e delle diverse culture. Il fiume di storie, visto da prospettive diverse, rende accessibile a noi e ai visitatori il presente, il passato e il futuro di Anversa e del mondo. Noi collaboriamo con il pubblico e il privato, a livello nazionale e internazionale. La nostra ampia collezione si estende da storia, arte e cultura della città portuale di Anversa, attraverso commercio e spedizioni internazionali fino ad arrivare all’arte e cultura in Europa, Africa, America, Asia e Oceania. Visione

Il MAS non volge lo sguardo solo al passato, ma cerca costantemente spunti dal patrimonio culturale del presente e guarda anche al futuro. L’obiettivo è quello di inserire la collezione in un contesto attuale e socialmente rilevante. Il museo è un luogo di incontro e partendo dalla sua base ad Anversa, rivendica la sua posizione non solo a livello locale ma anche (inter)nazionale. L'approccio utilizzato si basa sulle seguenti priorità a partire dal presente, dal passato e dal futuro: la città e il porto di Anversa come punti nodali nel mondo; la diversità culturale a livello globale/locale e il collezionismo.
Diverse prospettive: In una società in cui la gente è sempre più indipendente e condivide le informazioni in maniera sempre più veloce, è importante dimostrarsi aperti alle visioni e ai punti di vista altrui. Il MAS si pone l’importante compito di offrire e, se necessario, interpretare le diverse prospettive. Le molteplici collezioni fungono da filo conduttore. Partendo dall’idea che uno sguardo più ampio allarga anche gli orizzonti del pensiero, con il MAS vogliamo contribuire allo sviluppo di una cittadinanza europea. Solo una città così assortita come Anversa può offrire il terreno su cui iniziare a costruire una coscienza: ognuno di noi appartiene a diverse comunità che condividono un unico mondo. Attraverso la nostra collezione cerchiamo punti di incontro che invitino all’osservazione attenta e al riesame, alla riflessione e al dialogo sul proprio posto nel mondo.
Sperimentazione: In qualità di museo, il MAS anela al ruolo di leader nell’ambito dei nuovi metodi di lavoro all’interno dei musei. Naturalmente partiamo dalle funzioni di riconoscimento e raccolta, conservazione e sicurezza, ricerca, guida, presentazione e partecipazione. Ma vogliamo anche sperimentare con la collezione e con l’edificio: per questo motivo, esploriamo nuovi metodi per raccontare le diverse storie ai diversi tipi di pubblico. In aggiunta, vogliamo offrire al pubblico e al privato nuovi spazi per la sperimentazione, nella convinzione che in questo caso il processo possa essere addirittura più importante dell’obiettivo. Anche in futuro il MAS lascia spazio al talento creativo, perché crediamo che la fiducia reciproca rafforzi la collaborazione. Il MAS impara dagli esperimenti.
Internazionalità: Con base ad Anversa, dove le collezioni sono cresciute fino alla grandezza attuale, il MAS è un museo internazionale. Questa sua caratteristica è visibile innanzitutto nella provenienza delle collezioni. Streetart hoort stilaan evengoed bij Antwerpen als Brabo, de Schelde en de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwetoren. Van de tags van de graffitipioniers tot de enorme murals van street artists: de stad is een speeltuin én een open museum voor wie houdt van urban art. De Antwerp Streetart City-tour leidt je langs meesterwerken op muren in het centrum van de stad. Uiteraard kan je in Antwerpen nog veel meer streetart-ontdekkingen doen. Internationale broeihaard voor streetart
Net als in de rest van de wereld kende de streetart ook in Antwerpen een ingrijpende evolutie. De oorsprong ligt in de tags en andere graffiti en is verbonden aan de hiphopcultuur. Antwerpen ontpopte zich als een internationale broeihaard van de streetart. Vandaag is streetart een kunstvorm die ook een rol speelt in verfraaiing van de stad. Maar de street artists zijn de roots van hun passie niet vergeten. Streetart zal daarom nooit mainstream worden.

De jeugdwerkhelden van Habbekrats door A Squid Called Sebastian, Links One en Flash

Ontmoet de superhelden van Sint-Andries
Achter deze kleurrijke mural huist jeugdwerking Habbekrats. De jeugdwerkers die zich elke dag inzetten voor de kwetsbare jongeren van de Sint-Andrieswijk zijn superhelden. En dat zetten de drie street artists in de verf. We herkennen enkele befaamde superhelden. Bovenaan waakt de mascotte van Habbekrats over de kinderen en jongeren van de wijk.
Stempel op de wijk
Wat achter deze gevel gebeurt, weet niet iedereen. De mural licht een tipje van de sluier op. Habbekrats drukt een stempel op de wijk, net als de superhelden op de muur. “Dit werk spreekt me daarom erg aan”, vertelt streetart-kenner Arno Arnouts, die op een jeugddienst werkt. “Je kan jeugdwerkers niet genoeg in de bloemetjes zetten.”
Street artists doen het samen
De mural van de jeugdwerkhelden is een gezamenlijke creatie van A Squid Called Sebastian, Links One en Flash. Zo’n samenwerking kom je wel vaker tegen in de streetart-wereld. Werk van Links One en Flash vind je onder meer ook op het Muntplein, verderop in deze tour. A Squid Called Sebastian (ASCS) is geboren in de VS, waar hij de graffiti ontdekte. In 1989 verhuisde hij met zijn gezin naar Gent. Streetart was hier toen nog erg beperkt aanwezig, maar het werk van renaissance- en surrealistische kunstenaars kon hij wel veelvuldig bewonderen. Sinds kort leeft hij enkel voor zijn kunst, die hem de hele wereld rond doet reizen.

Culla internazionale della street art
La street art ha conosciuto ad Anversa, così come nel resto del mondo, un’evoluzione radicale. Le radici della arte urbana risiedono nei “tags” (firme degli artisti) e nei graffiti e sono strettamente legate alla cultura hip hop. Anversa si è rivelata una culla internazionale dell’arte di strada. Al giorno d’oggi questa forma d’arte gioca un ruolo fondamentale nell’abbellimento della città. Tuttavia, gli artisti di strada non dimenticano l’origine della loro passione e per questo motivo la street art non diventerà mai mainstream.

Vieni a conoscere i supereroi di Sint-Andries
Il palazzo su cui è stato realizzato questo coloratissimo murale ospita Habbekrats, un’organizzazione di assistenza alla gioventù. Gli assistenti che ogni giorno si prendono cura dei giovani con minori opportunità di questo quartiere sono dei veri e propri eroi e i tre artisti di strada li ringraziano con un tributo in vernice. Nel murale riconosciamo alcuni dei supereroi più famosi capeggiati dalla mascotte di Habbekrats che dall’alto veglia sui bambini e sui giovani del quartiere.
Simbolo del quartiere
Non tutti sanno cosa succede nel palazzo dietro questa facciata. Il murale svela in parte il segreto. Habbekrats ha lasciato il segno nel quartiere, proprio come i supereroi sul muro. “Quest’opera mi piace tanto per questo motivo”, racconta l’esperto Arno Arnouts, che lavora anche in un’organizzazione giovanile. “Nessun omaggio renderà mai abbastanza onore agli assistenti”.
La collaborazione degli artisti di strada
Il murale sugli assistenti eroi è il risultato della collaborazione tra A Squid Called Sebastian, Links One e Flash. Nel mondo della street art è solito trovare collaborazioni di questo tipo. A Muntplein, più in avanti in questo tour, è possibile ammirare un’altra opera di Links One e Flash. A Squid Called Sebastian (ASCS) è nato negli Stati Uniti e qui ha scoperto il mondo dei graffiti. Nel 1989 si è trasferito con la famiglia a Gand, dove però la street art non si era ancora sviluppata. Tuttavia, ha potuto ammirare spesso le opere di artisti rinascimentali e surrealisti. Di recente ha fatto dell’arte la sua professione e la sua vita e grazie a lei adesso è richiesto in tutto il mondo.
