Source text - English According to Cha (2001), since the culture and language are tied up as one, people learning foreign languages can approach other cultures more easily. Byram(2010) considers the interconnection between culture and language as a sophisticated relationship. It gets even harder to learn and communicate between two languages if the two cultures take in very divergent and contrasting features.
Bateman (2002) conducted an experiment where students have a meaningful experience, in which they can have an interview with native speakers. This experience derived great benefits not only for the students who spoke a second language very fluently but also for students who spoke very little. Because no matter how fluently they spoke second languages, with the involvement of cultural exchange, they were all encouraged to be more open-hearted toward foreign culture, by which they were more exposed to learning new languages.
The purpose of the current study was to determine if there is a relationship between three variables which are ethnocentrism, openness to other cultures, and willingness to learn languages. Based on Tamanal’s research (2010), cultural factors have the strongest relationship to the acquisition of a second language. It is hypothesized that the less ethnocentrism people have and the more open people are to other cultures, they are more likely to be willing to learn other languages. This research was intended to provide a greater understanding of cultural openness and language learning willingness.
