Bio
I am a Korean-American with native fluency in both Korean and English. I have a background and expertise in physics and engineering, and have also studied chemistry, organic chemistry, biology, and mathematics. My subject areas in technical translation include, but are not limited to, physics, astronomy, aerospace, aeronautics, chemistry, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, information technology, mathematics, biology, bioengineering, medicine, and pharmacology/pharmaceutics. My proficiency in science and technology has given me a unique advantage in translation, but I have discovered in retrospect that my hobbies have helped me become a more versatile translator as well. The following are some of these hobbies.
Reading: I love reading poems, novels, short stories, and plays both in Korean and in English. In addition to Korean and American masterpieces in their respective languages, I have read great works of literature by many authors from around the world in both Korean and English: Shakespeare, Goethe, Maupassant, Tolstoy, Cao Xhequin to name just a few. I have also read many escape novels. However, my reading is not limited to artistic works and fiction. I read nonfiction in many areas, such as politics, culture, history, and economics. I read not only broadly, but also in depth. For example, if a foreign policy attracts my attention, I read newspapers from different countries to see all the facets of the issue. In deciding how to vote on a proposition, I read the legal text as well as the debates. If a medical topic interests me, I do a research and read the relevant medical journals.
Entertainment: I am an experienced gamer, and I know the special vocabulary used in computer games. I grew up reading manga and watching anime, and have read many fantasies as well. I have also read comic books, and watched the cartoon and movie adaptations. The cinema is another hobby of mine. I watch movies in most genre, action, animation, science fiction, classic, artistic, and shorts to name a few. I love good movies from every culture and continent. I also understand what goes on behind the scenes. I have had opportunities to observe the movie production process from filming to distribution, and they have been most interesting experiences.
Food: I love tasting and cooking, but my interest in food reaches further. I watch cooking shows, read recipes and articles about different cuisines, and invent my own recipes. As a result, I am proficient with the vocabulary and terms used in Korean, American, Japanese, French, Italian, Chinese, and southeast Asian cuisines.
I also love art, art history, many genres of music, and traveling.
I can translate anything from Korean to English (my favorite) and from English to Korean. The above are just some of the areas in which I have comprehensive knowledge.
