Swedish term

hålla i något

Swedish to English Bus/Financial Government / Politics
What's a good translation of this (non-dictionary?) expression, as in:
Departementet har tillsatt en tjänsteman som ska hålla i frågan. Is it 1)be responsible for 2)keep track of 3)deal with this matter?
I prefer 1) at the moment.

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Jul 1, 2005:
Thanks for all the comments. I conclude that hålla i is the same as ta hand om (pace native speakers!). So there is really a wide choice of synonyms, depending on the context.

I suggest this good idiomatic phrase, which means just keeping an eye on events, reacting when necessary. See ref

neutral Anette Herbert : could be right depending on context, usually "hålla i en frågainvolves a bit more input.

Isn't that what government "tjänstemän" are doing all the time? (Only trying to cheer us up!)
neutral Robert Creutz (X) : Rather, "tackle."

deal with something

I also agree with you but witf your 3). Being responsible could be a supervisory funktion only.
Peter's suggestion I also find a bit further from 'hålla i', which wants to convey the feeling 'hands on' 'be on the ball' .
'Hålla i' ALSO contains portions of responsibility, for sure

pursue the matter

Connotes both to be in charge and to be persistent in achieving the goal, but without any sense of urgency or particular time frame. Also implies delegation of responsibility. Just how government officials like it ...

\"Tackle the matter\" is also good. Stronger than just \"handle.\" Not \"be responsible for.\"

agree Mats Wiman : You say it better than me

Thanks. The two expressions are no more synonomous than all the different suggestions given here,
