The English construction ‘go and’ does not presuppose ‘walking’, ‘running’, ‘approaching’ or any other form of proceeding. If you are suspicious of a construction that does not involve a verb doublet, then select Francis’ version with ‘wagen’

: my (second) thoughts precisely / "to go and ..." sometimes means "hingehen und ..." - but IMO not in this case

: Yes, but it should read "die es wagte...". "etwas wagen" is not a reflexive verb.
