writeaway Jul 7, 2005:
I did wonder but with so little context was hard to say. then use 'formerly' perhaps
Non-ProZ.com Jul 7, 2005:
He is not dead. He signed the document yesterday.

Firma autentica dichiaratami aposta da Carlo Pirlo, coniugato, fu Giovanni, cittadino italiano...

Could it mean that his former name was Giovanni or that her wife Ms. Giovanni, if any, is dead?

ok, I heard from a colleague (the site legal ace) that it means \"son of the late Giovanni\". you can count on this being right. I wanted her to enter it herself but since she hasn\'t,here it is.

son of Giovanni

"fu" stays for son of Giovanni it's an italian way of write in particular documents especially legal document, just to have more exsactly information on such persons.
Hope it helps!!
Peer comment(s):

neutral writeaway : son of the late Giovanni-got it from an extremely reliable source and found references to back it. was sure the word 'fu' had to have something to do with 'being dead'.
