bare stone
This is a bit of a habit in some regions of Italy. It does not mean "living stone" but simply bare stone, dressed or otherwise shaped for some use, usually road paving or building, hence unclad by plaster or other covering . In Salento, Southern Italy, all stone is called "pietra viva" meaning that in its final place it is bare "viva" at the touch.
