Glossary entry (derived from question below)
Dutch term or phrase:
ROEPVRAAG
English translation:
exclamatory question
Dutch term
ROEPVRAAG
wat kan er allemaal mis gaan bij . . .
Nothing in Van Dale; only one Google hit that no longer exists.
If all else fails, I will go with:
Class question (vs. class answer) (group question, collective question?)
2 | exclamatory question | Jack den Haan |
3 +7 | Starter question | Adam Smith |
2 +3 | an open question | hirselina |
5 | Rondvraag | hirselina |
3 | rhetorical question | Nanda Weiland |
Non-PRO (1): Stefan de Boeck (X)
When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.
How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

http://www.lacrosseforums.com/showthread.php?p=279680:
Can't you ALL use good grammar? Sure, it may have been an exclamatory question, but it's a question nonetheless. Both Laxdevil and Coltslax said "Don't you read!" with no question mark, making it a demanding statement saying "Do not read." One more thing, don't critisize my imperfect grammar, i almost never capitalize my I's.
Hope this helps...

Adam Smith
: Thanks for clarifying your comments, Jack. I'd have changed mine too, but haven't figured out how yet! No harm was intended by mine either. :-) I'm wondering whether this is more of a linguistic term, than something used in everyday language?

You could be quite right about the term being more of a linguistic kind of thing, Adam. But in my opinion, your first suggestion is certainly a possibility! And the problem with my suggestion, is that it does NOT really seem to fit the context :-)

'Roepvraag' as I interpret it here has a rhetorical ring about it. In my opinion, not an ideal way to start a presentation if you're trying to sollicit answers from your audience, which seems to be the case in the context Marijke gave.

rhetorical question
Starter question
E.g. let's open up the discussion with a starter question....
"Brainstorming: Using the chalkboard or an overhead machine, the teacher guides the students to think about places in the U.S. that they've heard of, and that they'd like to visit. A good starter question might be, "Where would you like to go in the U.S. if you could go anywhere?" Of course, the teacher can add places too."

It depends where the discussion is going, but how about a \"thought-provoking\" or \"provocative\" question?

: Seems to fit in nicely with the context! // Hi Adam, don't worry: no "dubbele bodems", no sarcastic, cynical or otherwise negatively intended meaning! Please take it as a postive comment that means exactly what is says :-)

Thanks Jack - as with most of your comments to my postings, I'm completely baffled once again. I'm sure you mean well - it's just difficult to fathom what you actually mean sometimes. <-)
