starting something completely new

Explanation:
Trailblazing originally meant marking out a route through new country, by one man going ahead and making marks, e.g. by laying "patterans" (twigs laid out as arrows) for others to follow.
It is now used to mean starting out to do something which no-one has ever done before (or as they say in Star Trek, "to boldly go where no man has gone before").

-> Thank you. No, I didn't know that. But I now seem to recall that the "blaze" is the light-coloured patch on a tree where the bark has been scaped off to mark the trail.

the source

Explanation:
Trail blaze

1) if you go to a place where there are no trails [a forest area], you blaze a trail by cutting down/through the foliage with a machete or other cutting instrument

2) It also means to provide markings on trees with paint when existing trails are not clear, so people can follow the right path through the forest/wood or jungle.

cheers

by extension, it means to go where others have not gone before

like Startrek...:)
