Discussion

Terence Ajbro Jan 19, 2006:
I understand it as meaning "for business purposes" as opposed to non-profit making. One would have to have more information about the deal, though.
Monika Lebenbaum (X) Jan 19, 2006:
Then I would say "on a commercial basis".
Susanne Lomander (asker) Jan 19, 2006:
More details Please forgive my not providing any context, I am a first-timer!

This is part of the definitions of an agreement regarding the business activities of a corporation and it stipulates that they should be conducted -

"skall bedrivas enligt affrsmssiga grunder och enligt de freskrifter som finns i avtalet"...

I am unsure whether they mean "in a businesslike manner" or "according to good business practices/principles", but there is no "good" in the source so maybe they mean that the "verksamhet" should be "for business purposes" and not non-profit or something similar.

Hope this helps!

in accordance with standard business practice

Very little context to go on, but I wonder if in this case they don't mean something like 'on a businesslike basis / in a businesslike manner'.

My suggestion above is certainly not very close to the Swedish, but it is an attempt to express the same idea in typical heavyweight business jargon that you might find him a contract. Only medium confidence.

Reply to Susanne : I think in this context the word 'enligt' is very significant - it strongly suggests 'in accordance with'. Coupled with the use of "skall", that suggests to me that it is to do with corporate governance rather than the purpose or objective of the business, as is implied by 'for business purposes'.

So I still think that 'in a businesslike manner' is what they mean, but that phrase does not sound very legal or contractual. That is why I suggested my heavyweight paraphrase. But if in doubt, in your situation I think I might use something like 'shall be conducted in a businesslike manner, and in accordance with the regulations contained in the contract'. But it's your call.

neutral asptech : You may have noticed by now that the expression is somewhat ambiguous. Your interpretation is literally correct, but the immediate connotation is a company that is expected to pay its way and make a reasonable profit.

I agrthat it is ambiguous, and with the connotaion you suggest.. But I think it also about a high standard of corporate governance.

according to businesslike principles

Hard to say, without knowing the context of the agreement. But I searched for "affarsmässig" here"

http://www-lexikon.nada.kth.se/skolverket/sve-eng.shtml

and got: affärs|mässig---businesslike, on business lines

Hope that helps!

Or "on a commercial basis", depending on context.

agree E2efour (X) : On a commercial basis /along business lines seems the only likely translation. I am concerned that anyone should use the word "businesslike" (=efficient) for affärsmässig, which clearly refers to profit.
