Discussion

Voloshka (asker) Apr 29, 2006:
Конечно, речь идёт о "новых русских" New Russian is a term denoting a stereotypical caricature of the newly rich business class in post-Soviet Russia. According to the stereotype, New Russians achieved rapid wealth by using semi-criminal methods during Russia's chaotic transition to a market economy. The term is possibly derived from French nouveau riche (newly rich).
Having a modest education and social background, New Russians are perceived as arrogant nouveau riche and gaudy, conspicuous consumers with poor taste. Money and status symbols are prominently displayed by the New Russian, in particular jewelry and luxury cars.

Fat cat is slang term which describes a rich, greedy person who, due to ownership of capital, is able to "live easy" off the work of others. Often, those labeled "fat cats" will reap a sustantial financial gain from a business, while the business itself, and the people who are employed by it, do not. The term is also sometimes used to refer disparagingly to wealthy contributors to a political campaign. (http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/fat cat)

есть еще одно слово (правда несколько уже, чем требуемое):
nouveau riche
the nouveau riche - people who have become rich recently and who buy expensive things in order to show people how much money they have. She refused to live in Beverly Hills which she considered far too nouveau riche. (http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/nouveau riche)

the nouveau riche
people who have become rich recently and who buy expensive things in order to show people how much money they have. He is one of the country's nouveau riche who have made fortunes in shipping, hotels, and real estate.

Kevin, cпасибо за дельное слово, но его значение "is someone who is able to spend money acquired by the thrift of predecessors or ancestors" не подходит, в данном случае деньги сыпались из других источников :(
