Mondial (typically for soccer)
To my knowledge, it refers to "Mundial" (spanish) following the Football world cup in 1982 in Spain. Afterwards, it became "Mondial" in other European countries (especially France, probably Enfland or Germany, tbc). It is generally admitted for soccer or football World Cup.
According to your context, it clearly applies to football....Which will start soon in June 2006.

the World Cup
It nearly always refers to football - although worldwide is the official usage of the word.
