Marksmen and women

This is the usual term for somebody who fires guns at targets. An archer would only be used for somebody using a bow and arrow.
Example sentence:

This could only have been carried out by a skilled marksman

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you - in the end I used "marksmen and markswomen" as the text was to be spoken."

crack-shots

would be my preference if only to avoid the utterly ugly (IMO) "...Innen und ...en" construction. I really think the German has taken "PC" too far by a mile...but then we have been used to students, listeners, footballers (YES!!) and so on, and not studentesses, listeneresses and footballeresses, for longer than I can remember... How stupid...

target shooters

"target shooting" is a common name for this sport.
Peer comment(s):

agree Darin Fitzpatrick : Just plain "shooter" works, too. A "shooter" is a participant in a shooting sport. A "marksman" is a particularly skilled shooter.

thanks!
agree Ian M-H (X) : A perfectly acceptable option, see e.g.: http://www.issf-shooting.org/update/worldranking.asp

athletes

... would be one way round this prolem in your specific context, being neither clumsy nor sexist.

Although my first association with "athlete" is track and field athletics, rifle/shooting organisations certainly use the term. There are dozens of valid native Google hits from Britain and N. America. Just one example:
