Outdoor-Touristen

German to English Art/Literary Tourism & Travel Travel book
I feel like there out to be a simple translation for this horrible piece of denglish, but I can't put my finger on it. It's not just adventurous types because it also includes golf, fishing etc. The text is from a travel book about Patagonia. TIA for any help.

Discussion

Francis Lee (X) Oct 25, 2006:
Wow, looks like a new Kudoz feature: an "Ask/Note to/from Francis" box. No need, thanks. This message will self-destruct in ..., well, when a Moderator (please) deletes it. ;-)
Günther Toussaint Oct 24, 2006:
@Francis: I apologise for my harsh reaction. Most likely you wrote your answer after you read mine (posted after 3 min) without having read my additional comment (6 min), but when you posted your answer (10 min), you could have seen it...
Ulrike Kraemer Oct 24, 2006:
"Outdoor-Tourist" is FREnglish, not DEnglish IMHO ;-)

outdoor enthusiasts

I think this is what we'd actually call them. No real need for the "touriust" bit.

I suppose "recreational tourists" would also be an option.

"The fragile natural environment was at risk
from the constant presence of campers, hikers, surfers and other recreational tourists."

That's bad manners, Günther. It was the first thing that occured to me - at a time when the only thing you had written was "outdoor tourist". Plus I at least took the time (!) to provide a reference. Surely it's about reasoning, not a race?

outdoor tourists

what's wrong with "outdoor tourists" (in ENGLISH!)?
In German it's a different story...

an accentuation would be "outdoor enthusiasts"
Peer comment(s):

agree Tanja K : I like 'outdoor enthusiasts'

thx, Tanja, but I should have stated it as answer, not as comment :-(
agree Lancashireman : I also like 'outdoor enthusiasts'. 'Outdoor types' might also fit.

thx, Andrew
neutral Francis Lee (X) : As you see this as a race, bear in mind that if you'd a) posted a new answer b) bothered to find and post a reference, this would've taken more time.

disagree Lancashireman : Best not to click on CL5 because this means 'Highest - I am sure'. Unfortunately this answer refers to 'attractions' rather than the people who visit them. (I thought that Google skims had been banned?)

hardy tourists

This version keeps the 'tourists' but ditches the problematic 'outdoors'

Alternatively 'outdoor types' (see comment to GT's answer)
