Discussion

Giles Watson Dec 2, 2006:
For Anthony: "mentoso" isn't in my wine glossary because I've never seen it before ;-) In fact, it rather looks like an ugly calque of the English "minty". I'll wait for a few more occurrences before adding it to the database.

minty/menthol-edged

Is there any reason not to translate it literally I wonder?

Example sentence:

Hardys Reserve Shiraz 2001 South Eastern Australia. Nicely structured, this big red wine shows minty, menthol-edged berry fruit with a spicy finish. (£6.49).

agree Umberto Cassano : mentolato = minty secondo il Watson's Wine Glossary

Thanks Umberto - I wonder what the great Giles would make of "menthol-edged", which is a bit of a neologism, but gives a slightly more aromatic idea than "minty"

agree Giles Watson : For Anthony: "menthol-edged" perhaps suggests a pepperminty overtone.

Thanks Giles - yes "a little more aromatic" was my attempt to get that idea cross I suppose. BTW "mentoso" is not yet in Watson's Wine Glossary, whereas "mentolato" is there as "minty"

minty

you could go for 'minty fruit' or 'minty bouquet'

minty after taste

another idea
Peer comment(s):

neutral Anthony Green : why an aftertaste? From Lizzy's question it sounds more like the attack

suadente refers to the taste, that's why I gave that suggestion
