Spanish term

fundaciones y obras sociales de las cajas de ahorro

Spanish to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. Voluntary Sector
Individually, I understand the above to mean the following:

social foundations/social security/savings banks

Do they have a different meaning when used together in this context?

Further context:

La creación de un foro o comité de expertos, procedentes de diversos sectores sociales, con presencia de las *fundaciones y obras sociales de las cajas de ahorro*, con el fin de proponer instrumentos alternativos para una financiación duradera y
sostenible.

Many thanks!

Discussion

Noni Gilbert Riley Jan 31, 2007:
Sorry, I didn´t address yr q directly. Yes, obra social and fundaciones are separate although often v similar activities.
Noni Gilbert Riley Jan 31, 2007:
Oh no, not obra social! I always find it such a proble, since the legislation behind it exists only for the cajas de ahorros in Spain. Fortunately in this case the context is general enough for us to offer CSR as translation, but this isn´t always possibl

Peer comment(s):

agree Andy Watkinson : Agreed. The "obra social" is always a pain. Endless lists of the Caja's "good works", but no mention of their charging the highest banking fees in Spain.

savings banks' foundations and benefit programs / health care institutions

It depends on what country it is destined to. Basically, obra social is a health care institution in Argentina, usually trade union-run or instituted by large companies for their personnel.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Andy Watkinson : This is unrelated to trade unions or large companies. Spanish "cajas de ahorro" are obliged to earmark a certain percentage of their turnover for "obra social". -
